Description Pattern Magic is one of the forms of magic used by Nei'ess De Magens, one of my most developed and longest running original characters. He is a Magi, a race that looks human except for their eyes which constantly change color. They have the inherent ability to manipulate colors and create illusions at will, plus they use that ability to draw the patterns necessary for pattern magic instantly. Pattern magic is strong and anyone can use it, but few people bother drawing out the circles by hand.

The Magi are a servant race, bound by oath, magic, and blood to serve a master. They can't use something as complex as pattern magic unless they have a current master, since being masterless drains their magic until they eventually die (a process which can be delayed by serving other people even without the bond).

Magic based on circles and patterns is a common idea, but looks so cool. The main difference is in design of the patterns and how they are used. After all, drawing a complex pattern out by hand takes time to cast, but if you can draw it instantly or the circle just appears after you cast, then it can work. And look awesome.

I'm not worried about being copied, so if you like any of the ideas you see here, feel free to base something off of them. Just don't copy it exactly and I won't care. Inspiration comes from odd places.

Yea, i think im gonna have my magic system based on more of pattersn on the body so they are just like cast the spell and the symbols rearrange or the caster does something to activate em or something like that (it would take forever to do something like that XD)

And sorry, I just wanted to say that cause i've made comments about how something is similar to an idea i've had and some ppl get all paranoid XD

Hmm... that reminds me more of two other magic systems I've used. The tattoo mages drew spells on their bodies using magic, blood, and special crystals. The spells either had a constant effect or could be activated by tracing the main shape of the tattoo. The other system was for the clerics of LaSol, who marked their rank with symbols on their body that helped channel the power needed for their spells.

I like the idea of the patterns being able to rearrange. You'd have to figure out the mechanism for that though. Is it a side-effect of casting the spell or a pre-requisite for casting (aka, which comes first, the spell or the pattern)? And would there be other elements to the spell like hand gestures or chants?

I'm not a paranoid person. I love bouncing ideas off of people and seeing what happens. If we think along the same lines, that's just because they are cool lines to follow.

Oooh nice work. I hope I can do justice to my original characters' magic circles.

Thank you. Magic circles are awesome but difficult to design in a way that does the images/impressions in my head justice. I found that this tutorial helped. It does require having at least Photoshop CS.
