"He's starving himself, look at him," one cried, flicking her luminescent tail back and forth in clear agitation and something that he could almost say looked like concern if the young boy didn't know better.

"He's a guppy, isn't this a bit harsh," another prodded only to be snapped at, literally.

He didn't have to raise his head to tell that the matron's jaws had found their target. The smell of the blood was telling enough.

"You must eat child, or the witch will have more than just your head," was warbled by a third, ignoring the argument of the others all together.

Isolation is the worst kind of punishment for a mer. They thrive on social and physical contact, (like humans--but more). When Danny refuses to eat, they ban him from the common areas and isolate him in what's called the "Jaws of Formation".
