Description Well, this took me a little over two hours to do. Three layers, and only a little black used on the edges to round it off. Everything else: bonus round fun! I loved working on this.

It is my hope to learn how to actually tighten up my works, and get better at focusing on the details.

I know the hair looks a little shabby, but I was trying to imply he had white hair, without painting all of it. And one red streak, because people with streaked hair are cool.

Yes, I cheated on the gems, and only did one of them. But they look damn good.

And yes, more tenebrism. Mmmmmm, shadows.

*If there are typing problems, please forgive my tired mind.*

EDIT: I redid most of the hair. I'm much happier with it now. I also touched up the eyes, make them a little more flamey violent intense.

I like this. The eyes look lively.

Again, I love your vampire works and the gleaming buttons that you do. I know I sound like a broken record but you are very good and deserve recognition. I know you get down on yourself at times in your work and you feel that you are artistically at a standstill but that isn't so...you keep on getting back up and trying more and more techniques and ideas with your speedpaints and such.

Great work as usual, and you know me....I have areas that I love....as always it is the jewels but the hand is wonderfully rendered here. Very convincingly done.

*blushes* Thank you. I hadn't paid attention to how correct the hand turned out until you pointed it out.

Thanks so much.

For a two-hour work this is really good. My impression is that the pros usually work between 15-30 hrs on their pieces, so you could really do wonders if you spent some more time on details and further texturing. His eyes are really enigmatic - I wish I could paint a gaze like that!

In the original photo, he has this very mischievous/amused look on his face. With the cropping and the coloring, it's now a mix of so many things. Even I can't figure out what emotion is has right now.

I know on my more "polished" pieces (I'm very self conscious of calling them anything serious) it can take me 20-30 hours, depending on the level detail. It's part of why I want to learn to be faster, so that I can do something good in a decent amount of time.

Even though I have the psd still, I have no idea how to make it more polished. I'm kind of stuck, since I just wanted it to be a speed painting.

I don't know how you work, but my own experience is that rough and intuitive brush-strokes makes a good speedie, and also gives a foundation upon which polishing comes natural. I really know the feeling of seeing something that is utterly unfinished, but having no clue on how to proceed. I think all the elements must be there from the very start, so that you don't loose them during the earlier stages of the painting process. It's my understanding that the best pieces has the most complete sketches, whose qualities are all preserved while painting. I'm not very good at following these advices myself, but that's how I would ideally work

*smirks* I can either do rough speed paints, or completed works. If I don't start off with the idea of a detailed finished piece in mind, I just can't get it there. It's good to see I'm not the only one.

For such a vampire design on dA, my wonderful dearest ladyshalafae, I think this is simply an excellent well-effective piece of work!!! And my, he is quite damn handsome as well!!! !

I simply love the colors and what you did with this one (even on the hair and everything!), which is like a splendid little character portait you made here... and the dripping blood-mark on the end of his lip is really convincing and adds some life to this work!! Truly a *serious* yes from me on β€œSp: Lando vampire”... brilliantly well done!!! !

What delicious shadow work! I wish I was half as bold with blackness as you are.

The hair could use some work, this is true. I suggest painting it as a block and highlighting the strandedness only. That is, the only strands you see are those illuminated by the highlight. That way, it doesn't all look streaky.

BUT THE RED BIT IS REALLY GOOD. So there you go.

ladyshalafae In reply to lupie-stardust [2007-10-22 14:26:52 +0000 UTC]

The blackness is easy. I just picked a lovely dark blue, and painted on top of that. I just built up the white parts.

I'm probably going to work on the hair again get al the white parts where I like them better. And I'll implement your idea. It was sorta what I was trying to do, but failed at.

AMAZING! I have tried to mimic something similar to this style in photoshop, but to no avail.

Perhaps at some point you could do a tutorial? I really enjoy your style, and this came out beautiful.

Thank you. I'm very flattered. I think I may put together a tutorial for this tenebrism style, though I am just learning it myself.

This was actually done in Photoshop. I think it makes it a little easier.
