Hi
No I don't mind
I'm currently 20, and I started car art when I was your age, 17. So...that upper drawing is one which I made when I was 17, and 1 year later I made the R8
So...if you rly go for it, draw many cars and develop your skills, you can achieve results like this in 1 or 1.5 year aswell Maybe even earlier
Also thanks a lot for the comment, in the meanwhile I'm some further, but due to education I barely have the time to draw much more

Thanks for having a look^^
And in fact, this comment confirms that my main reason for uploading this, did it's job This is to show that pretty much is possible in relativly short time, for anyone
I mean...you don't need talent, just a hell lot of practice
So yeah you can do it, just go for it
Thanks for the comment 'n fave

No prob
Haha, I bet that! I just need some help on my shading, because I suck at it. Really you were the first ever car drawing that I have ever seen, is it hard to draw cars? I draw really anything but open to new things.
Your welcome

Hmm well I can slightly give some advice, but they are more sort of guiding, because it is more about seeing it by yourself while doing it, there's not much theory behind it^^
Cars are not easy to draw, I have to admit. Especially drawing them freehand. I did that before, like the one on top of this deviation. I did this for a while with the intention to be able to draw them anywhere-anytime.
But suddenly I decided I only wanted to go for result, it didn't matter anymore that I needed a reference with guidelines. So...I switched to the Grid-method for a lot more accuracy. For me, this was something that opened my world. The quality of the results increased rapidly by using it.
But; Now afterwards it would have been better for me that I would have continued doing freehand, since I have to design my own stuff now. But well, at that time, all I wanted was my cars to look believable So..my suggestion: Think of what you want: If you want to become a designer, stick with freehand. If you it only for fun, I suggest using the Grid-Method, because it offers a lot more accuracy
I can give you more details about this if you like
So...just let me know if you would like to hear some suggestions and things to try, and I will try to explain them Sorry if my grammar sucks, but I'm Dutch so forgive me for that^^

I look at car drawings and then think of how to draw them and I'm like nah. They do look hard, so I agree with that. My major for when I go to college will be business but designer on the side; cause I love business things and then art things. So yeah.
I did hear of the grid-method before. My friend, uses it a lot for her drawings, but I tried it once and like you said it's great for precise drawings. I'm more of a freehand drawer and writer lol.
Although, do you have any tips on how to shade? Like really I have no idea how to shade. Never really was taught the "right" way. So anything will be appreciated.
Also, I totally understood you. That's so cool your Dutch. I'm jealous now.

Laggtastic In reply to HorsesRule8 [2012-11-25 19:36:07 +0000 UTC]
Well, that's EXACTLY what went through my mind aswell, 3 years ago
Though somehow I worked my way up, very slowly, but according to others; Improving a very small bit with each drawing And well..I believe anyone can do that, if I can do it^^ So yea keep trying, never give up
Sounds cool, business combined with art o.O
Ah okay, good to read you know already what it is, and even tried it. Also a good thing to know that you go for free-handing instead of precise artworks, so I have a better view of what you actually want to reach as artist. In this case; Draw anything 'n anywhere you want^^
Well about the shading, first of all; If I explain things you already know; Sorry for that Also when I come to important things, I will mark them bold, this way it's easy to remember the key things...
Also what I will explain here, is what I have experienced, and my workflow. There might be better ways, but well...I feel comfortable with this set of rules
let's get started. When shading, no matter if you use graphite or color pencils; Try to use a circulism way of coloring. I often made strokes when I started but after seeing some tutorials, I learned myself to make use of circle movements as much as possible. Reason: This covers the area a lot better and equally, when using strokes it often leaves stroke-marks of the direction you draw the strokes.
Keep in mind that this is not allways possible, for example very thin areas like grills, or close to edges. Also; When I started coloring a certain part of the drawing which had a big surface, for example the side of a car, I used to rush a bit. Because it's so big, you want to fill it up a.s.a.p. But well, the result of this is not so good, because the contrast between small areas (which were colored pretty nice) and the big areas (which turned out with a rushed look), was to big. So no matter how big the area is; Work on square inch, by square inch, by square inch, etc. Well you can make your own rules for this when it comes to the measurements of the area you want to work on; just make sure it's not to big
Also a bit of planning comes around the corner if you want to color something. Why? Well, some colors smudge out a bit if you have colored an area, follow my moving your hand or arm over it, result: Dirty spots on other parts of the car... I had this a few times, and it sucks a lot. I'm not sure which hand you use for making art, but for this example I use the right hand, because I am right handed. If I start coloring, I tend to use from left to right. This way the colored part will not come in contact that much with your hand/arm, compared to randomly start to color somewhere.
Next to that, I find it comfortable to have some contrast in my work, also during the process. So when I start shading, I often start with black, or a darker color. Ofcourse, only where it needs. For example, the wheel units (hope that's the correct word for it, I never explained it with words haha) between the body of the car and the wheels them self. Also to illustrate what I just said, you could check out this WIP-book of my blue Audi drawing. It shows all steps I have scanned from start to finish
The final thing I can come up with, is that contrast catches eyes. If you make a drawing with a little bit contrast, it won't pop out that much. If I compare the amount of views of the ones without much contrast, and the ones I used some more contrast, I can conclude that (in general) the ones without much contrast are at 100-300 views, and the ones with more contrast 300+. Ofcourse there are some exceptions but it's just to emphasize what I just explained
For now this is all I could come up with, as suggestions and information behind it, with the reasons explained as much as I could do Sorry for the long text but I try to explain my stuff in detail, so that everything I want to tell, makes sense, or something like that
Finally, good to read you understood it all Well I dunno if being Dutch is something to be proud of...at least..not our government-.- Nowadays things are going not so well here, sort of crisis, I can tell ya o.O

Lol, well 3 years ago was a long time ago. Now your like perfect at them!
Thanks for the inspiration.
Business and art are two way differently subjects but know I work in a bridal industry and I make graphics and draw. It's some what easy though.
I appreciate all the info on shading! I will actually print that out and look back at it, when I go to first shade. One question though, how do I hold the pencil or what not?
Yeah, I learned about the Dutch government already. Pretty harsh things sometimes. But, i completely understand you.

Agreed but still remember some of those times^^ Not much though, I forget a lot^^'
No probz
Ahhh okay Well that makes sense indeed
No probz about the info, glad to share some of the stuff I learned.
Well about holding the pencil; I learned it the wrong way when I was young, and I still use it the same way so...I don't believe that there's much like good or bad when it comes to holding a pencil. It's a matter of playing with the pressure on the pencil for the shading but...that's all the theory about it as far as I know
Oh woah o.O So that gives you an indication of how things are going here, getting worse every week it seems=/ Thx for understanding^^

Lol I try to remember the good things of my life, even though that is very few.
Yes, it does.
Thank you so much! And okay, well, I'll just play around with it and see what happens!
Yeah, only in high school. But have a high background of a lot of things. And your welcome.

Sounds familiar, my youth was fck'd up so I'm trying to let life make sense these days, enjoy making artworks and communicating with artists 'n all people over te world. Digitally ofcourse, but well it's about the idea
Yep the best way to learn things is to play around with it. Check how others approach something, and see if you can find your own way, or simply do the same thing^^
Ah I see o.O Well that's a good thing so you can show later what ya got in a matter of skills 'n knowledge

Wow I can see clearly the difference.
Infact at school (IΒ΄m 15 ) i drew a Datsun Fairlady, and I think the quality is like this R8. IΒ΄m still making it but I think it looks very good and realistic
it is also drawn on A3 becasue usually I draw cars small on smaller than A4. I always draw with HB or 2B. sometimes H for detail. I will take a picture of it and upload it
rest of my car drawings..well. I sent you a link. tehy are not so good, but some are also nearly 2 years old. so i will delete them soon, i only upload for you to see. the most recent one is about last December.
I think this picture is very good, it is inspiring and makes me want to practise
btw this would have been too much Dutch for me to write xD

You can see the difference?
Well also I am at school haha, another 4 years
Is it a school project then? Because I look forward to see it
but take your time, please
As I sayd in the other reply I take a look through it
I'm glad this picture inspires you to practice And it's okay, I can read English too

Stolzer In reply to Laggtastic [2011-07-25 19:53:20 +0000 UTC]
Haha yes, just about see the difference xD
ItΒ΄s like a project I draw (mostly) cars in Art for my GCSE's (tests) for when I'm 16-17.
it maybe a few weeks before I can upload it. but I will, and I will send you a link
all of your work is inspirational
you should be very proud of your art
If I could, I would buy them to have a print!!
but i dont think my mom will let me xD
π: 0 β©: 1
Laggtastic In reply to Stolzer [2011-07-25 21:49:51 +0000 UTC]
Hahah you need a scope for it?
Well sounds pretty cool, so far I never had art class, but when I start game design in septembre I will, finally
That would be cool if you send it
Well all of my work? >.<
Well I am proud of most of them I gotta admit, something I barely say. Though most of times I appreciate art of others much more then my own
Well there's a reason why I dont submit my drawings as prints^^ My parents wont let me sell or buy something to or from anyone in another country=/
Also by myself I prefer selling them face 2 face, not by shipping or sending=/

Stolzer In reply to Laggtastic [2011-08-06 17:26:57 +0000 UTC]
Oh I completely forgot about this message xD
You will start game design? I like things like graphics design and animation, more in film animation ect. i think that is cool have you had before experience of game design?
I can understand not wanting to ship and sell. I would prefer face to face too, but we are just in different countries lol. but oh well, it dont matter ^^

Laggtastic In reply to Stolzer [2011-08-06 17:46:27 +0000 UTC]
Lol np XD
Recently I finished graphic design,
but it's not my thing lol, it's more aimed for what customers like, and not much own input (as I have experienced it), ofcourse theres a little opportunity sometimes but mainly we worked for customers, sometimes easy people, but sometimes those who don't know what they want....
And no, I haven't any experience actually.
I did a bit 3D, also sometimes I work on a map for a game, just an excisting game with lot of elements, so we can build our own maps^^
The game is Crysis, you might have heard about
And drawings ofcourse^^
But all of it was just free-time spendation, so no lessons, just own intention and anti-boredness
Aha ok, and yea...sometimes I wish the world would be easyer accessable to eachother right now some continents are unable by car, but also driving so long trip for just a drawing lol...aint something I would do >.<

Stolzer In reply to Laggtastic [2011-08-07 14:22:49 +0000 UTC]
What sorta things did you do for the graphics design then?
and in a few months, i maybe getting 3Ds Max. have you ever used it? ive never done 3D before, but its something i really wanna try and I will study in college ect. in the end I want to work in film animation
Look at this REALLY awesome animation, that somebody made with 3Ds [link] its soo cool I want to make something like this one day
and yeah I think so too lol.
Also, i've started a drawing of an Audi, because I love this new car [link] but it's far from finished yet. It's not amazing b ut so far it's better than my previous attempts , also its my first drawing in a long time
anyway I've leave you to it lol

I got this movie in my favourites for a while XD
I reqognized it when just seeing the title haha!

Good to see it also motivates other people,
believe me, if you go for it, you will reach it

Hell yeah it motivates
When I look at my work they all look almost same and I barely see any improvement. But this image is the proof that it's worth to practice
π: 0 β©: 1
Laggtastic In reply to Koxy911 [2011-01-26 19:38:03 +0000 UTC]
True, I thought EXACTLY the same way, but someone told me I had to keep doing it, although I didnt see the progress by myself. Since I started using grids, my world opened, since that moment I started noticing improvements, it looks much better when talking about proportions. So when people ask me how I draw or how to get proportions right, I allways tell them to try using a grid
π: 0 β©: 1
Koxy911 In reply to Laggtastic [2011-01-26 23:25:57 +0000 UTC]
Fortunately I have few friends too who believe in me and they keep pushing me to try and practice and all that It means a lot when you're not satisfied with your work.
And hm...maybe I should try using a grid too ^^ Well...maybe next time

Hehe well I don't have those, well now I have, but when I started I didnt have frinds which push me, then I found some artists here which kept me busy to improve, and those im very thankfull. Now Im a bit better, now much more people push me to keep going, and well...I definitly will, cause now I rly like it by myself^^
And yea if you want information about grids simply ask
Many people helped me so now its my turn to help people out
