Description
Edit: A little color change notice to people who may be making this, or using the colors for something else. When I got to the point of actually using the body colors, I realized they were slightly off-hue. Apparently matching colors for these things is the hardest part, especially when you have to convert from an additive color space to slightly shimmery dyed cotton. It doesn't help that I can only find one other RD cross stitch where the colors have been released. This time, I actually bought half a row of blues and broke out the old pony TCG cards to have something comparable. Anyway, the new colors should be better if you haven't used the old ones yet. Blame my laziness for reusing something from Lyra. It's finished!
Another pony cross stitch design! Out of the few vectors I had lined up for possible stitching, this one was the most adorable. (I mean, Dashie is always adorable, but just look at it!

I copy patterns by pen and paper because I no longer have a printer or by picture editor (my son has autism so no one can cope with his melt downs but me makes its hard find someone to watch him so I can run off to print stuff! He's very picky about people even family) but for some reason the editor that I use isn't playing nice! and won't save where I've marked up to. so a trip to library is in desperate need lol...ah cool will try 18 count instead of 16 count
thank you for the info hope my cousin will love it when it's finished x

I listed the DMC-brand colors in the description. I haven't tried other brands, because DMC is the only one we have here and they are high-quality. They come in 6-strand threads, so just use two strands in the normal way to get the perfect fill for 18-count fabric. If you want to make it bigger or smaller, you'll have to experiment.
Also, one thing I discovered halfway though this one is that you can make a frame of lightweight wood and use a staple gun to attach the aida to it while it's still stiff and sturdy. Mine was the ideal size to make that much better than hoops or scroll frames, since the thread can't get stuck on bottom of the aida, and nothing can get warped or creased like hoops cause.

The threads are only like 40 cents a color, and aida is around $5 a sheet. You can build your own frame out of wood, or get a cheap scroll frame for $10.

The old ones are ok if you've started, and they look the almost the same in the shade. 3761 just looks more Lyra-ish than proper cyan. If you've only started the stroke, that's not a problem, because that one really isn't very different.

I got 327 instead of 326, will that make that much of a difference? Or do I need to go get DMC 326?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Lahirien In reply to iced-ninja [2014-07-29 19:13:18 +0000 UTC]
According to my color guide book, there's a jump of two color families between them, from "rose" to "dark violet". I actually got a 327 as well to potentially use on a Twilight pattern, and next to each other they look very different, so I don't think 327 will work there. Here's the approximate colors. sta.sh/0tb41205bso
The DMC numbering system does get a bit confusing at times. Only short chunks of numbers are similar in color, with seemingly random jumps every few numbers. Look for the large "needlework thread color card" at your local store. If you can find a good coupon to use on it, it's definitely worth a buy if you do much cross stitching.

OK. I will get DMC 326 then. I'll save the 327 for the twilight one.

Looks really awesome!Very neat.
Can you say, what program was used to create it? I'm trying to make my picture into a pattern, but I'm not happy with what i get using on-line services.
thank you.

Lahirien In reply to Redilion [2014-07-28 16:38:53 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
I used PCStitch 10. Programs have never been very good at converting images automatically into stitching. The problem is, if you convert a photo you'll usually end up with a design that has dozens of colors you'll need to buy, most of which are only used on a few isolated pixels scattered throughout the frame, and if you convert something with solid colors you'll end up with weird artifacts, attempts at anti-aliasing, and mis-matched colors. Vectors, like this one, need to be done manually for the best result, using the original as an underlay and hand-placing individual stitches in colors you've picked yourself. Paintings with fine detail typically aren't suited for cross stitching unless you use a really big canvas, which will take you forever to actually stitch.

Lahirien In reply to Guptathegreat [2014-07-28 16:42:53 +0000 UTC]
I've seen those! Ones in stores tend to use low-count plastic and such for stiffness, but if you could build one out of finer material it could definitely be done.
