Description
This is my entry for the Red Bull Canimation contest. If you enjoy it please watch it again here [link] and give it a like. Unfortunately the initial stage of judging is based on the entries popularity do the only way I can progress it to get a lot of views -_-
It took me a week to do from start to finish and its a bit random, because I didn't have much time to plan out what I was going to do
FYI if you want it to stop playing right click on it and untick the play option

This reminds me of that myth with Zeus becoming a bull and getting it on with the queen, who just so happened to birth a monster: the Minotaur. But with better style.

Sadly no, but I'm super grateful to everyone who watched my video. It did make it through to the next round so everyone's views really helped!

This is soooooooooooooo cute. X3
I love how the animation and the action works with the music. Everything has a consistent, happy, cheery, playful energy and mood to it. And then, obviously, you sync some of the music with the animation directly, when the bull is being bounced by the sea creatures after they ride down the rainbow slide. That consistency makes it feel really unified and polished.
The girl is adorable. I loooove her design! Her figure, her hair, her outfit, her expressions -- she's a lot of fun, she's cute, and you really start to...identify with her and like her even from just a short little commercial. I think she's awesome from an artistic perspective -- I think she's so cute and likeable, but I think that's a big success from a Marketing/Advertising perspective. A lot of the most memorable commercials are ones that are able to make you fans of the character advertising, like the GEICO gecko. And it's hard to get people invested in a character when you only see them through a short 30 second commercial. But I think the girl here is super cute and charming and fun that you succeeded really well.
And part of that is by how you wrote the commercial. The girl is taken along for the ride by the bull, and the viewer identifies with being unexpectedly drawn into that adventure along with her.
The bull is awesome, too. I love his big, goofy, playful smile and eyes. He's so carefree and playful and fun. I think that's a great image, from the company's perspective -- to portray your product as something that takes a consumer on a fun, magical adventure. Though I'll touch a bit more on what I think of this from a marketing perspective in a minute.
Going back to the animation and the girl -- I love how fluid and lively it feels. I LOVE how her hair bounces around the whole time, from when she picks up the can and takes a drink, how it bounces as she rides on the bull's back, to how it sways as they're falling back down to earth, to how it bounces when she pokes her head back up from behind the picnic table at the end. For me, paying that much attention to the physics and motion of her hair does a TON to make this feel very energy, very lively, and to make the animation look and feel super interesting. And it's not just her hair -- even just her seemingly slight movements, like her shifting her weight back and forth as she takes a drink of Red Bull at the beginning, all look and feel very smooth and fluid. I really appreciate that fluidity of motion in this movie, especially when I see so many animated commercials on TV with cheap-looking, choppy animation.
And the same thing goes for the bull -- his animations are great -- his bouncy running and hopping all have this great energy that adds so much to the movie.
Visually, the one thing that I don't like as much is the can itself, lol. I imagine you wanted to use an actual image of it to showcase the product effectively, or maybe that was a requirement of the competition. But that look, of a realistic photo imposed in the lush, colorful, animated world, just feels jarring to me. I can see some good reasons to go that route, but I would've preferred that it be drawn in the same bright, colorful style as the movie itself.
But that's the only negative I have, and it's pretty minor. Otherwise, I ADORE this. The characters are cute, the pacing and everything is great, and the world and the animation are amazing.
Now, I've been thinking about this a bit since I first saw this in my devwatch. I have a Marketing degree (that I'm not doing anything with right now!) so in addition to appreciating it from an artistic perspective, I've been contemplating it a bit from a business perspective.
At first, I was unsure that it fit with how Red Bull, or energy drinks in general, try to brand and position themselves. Your movie is cute and adorable, and has this playful, magical, whimsical mood and feel to it that I find really charming. But at first I wondered if it would fit with how Red Bull wants to present itself, if it would appeal to their target demographic, who I perceive to mostly teenage and college age and young adult-aged dudes who are more masculine than me. In which case, while I love this, I wasn't sure if it would fit with their current marketing strategies.
But then I realized I was very wrong. Firstly, even if those assumptions WERE right, I'm thinking about (how I perceived) the brand to be here, where I live, when it's entirely possibly and probably likely that it's branded and advertised differently where you live. But beyond that, I hadn't thought it through much, and hadn't realized that "young, manly men" was more the target market I had assumed from seeing who, in my life, drinks energy drinks, when I don't myself. And even then, I was thinking more about other brands, like Rockstar and Monster, that have a much more aggressive and "guy" feel to them than Red Bull. And I started thinking about the Red Bull commercials I have seen, which are either silly, almost Far-Side-styled cartoons or otherwise playful, silly commercials that don't project that testosterone mood and feel that I was thinking of. Red Bull seems to cater towards a broader audience, not just dudes, and wants to communicate the idea that it's something fun and playful, something that fits into a happy, upbeat, playful lifestyle.
So, at first I was like, "I love this, but sadly I don't know if Red Bull would think it was a fit for them and their brand image." But after thinking about it a bit more carefully, I think I was wrong. I think this has a really upbeat, happy, a little silly, whimsical and FUN energy and message that fits with their brand really well, and pushes it a bit further in the right direction.
And then on top of that, even if that weren't true, the fact that they have a contest like this and that you submitted this piece of awesome movie/commercial shows that if they DID focus on catering to just young guys, like their competition does, or like Axe or Tag body spray does, I think this contest and this commercial would be a good way to target a segment that clearly exists but wouldn't have been addressed yet -- this would show people who aren't frat boy types that Red Bull is something for them to enjoy, too.
But again, that's all moot and theoretical, because in the end I think it fits with their brand image and positioning and the fun mood they're hoping to associate with, and that it does it a more engaging and fun way, not just because the mood and music and everything is really whimsical, but because the animation and art and characters and designs are high-quality and awesome.
....having said all that, I have to admit that I'm a horrible pal. I never got around to actually liking it on the site. : ( I'm sorry! Please don't hate me. ;___; I really should've, because I think it's amazing. It was really great to see some of your animation work! You're super talented!

Hey, thanks for the feedback!
Don't worry about not liking it on the site. It got through to the next stage but it didn't make it beyond that X( Ah well. I enjoyed making it and that's the main thing.
The brief want really to make an advert, though that's what most people went for. One of the rules was it had to have the Redbull can in it so I couldn't really get around the ugly can photo
Red bull has always been advertised in a very playful and silly way in the UK so I tried to stick with that but in the end they went for a more "artsy" video.
thanks for the in depth comment man. Its really helpful!

Going back and looking at the comment I wrote for this...I wrote a freakin' essay. I hope it wasn't too rambling! @__@
That's a shame that they went with something else. I think your movie is super cute and fun and playful and makes you smile as you watch it. I think it would've been a charming asset for Red Bull.
You're very welcome for the comment. I always adore your art! : )

Wow. Stunning, fluid animation; best I've seen on this site. Music was also well-chosen, and went with the animation flawlessly. And the whole thing gives a clear message: drinking Redbull gets you high.

Red bull probably is a kind of high. I cant drink it any more, since my last week of uni I drank about 15 cans just to make sure I wouldn't go to sleep so I could finish my work on time. That was a bad week!
