You're welcome to gain intellectual profit from it! There's a recipe I found in a reprint from a mediaeval book which describes the base cushion you then apply the gold leaf to. Leave me a message if you're interested!

Should be a useful tutorial for beginners. Have you had the opportunity to gild on vellum? You will find it extraordinarily sexy. What are you using for your ground? Gesso? If so, you should be able to get the ground almost smooth so there are no ripples in the gold when it is applied. You forgot to mention the importance of doing gilding in a room without a draft. I have lost more pieces of gold leaf that way...

I don't remember #7 being part of my gilding tool kit.

Thanks for sharing your technique for others to study.

The gold ground is made after a recipe in "Illuminierbuch" ("Illuminator's handbook") by Valentin Boltz of Ruffach, printed in 1549. It is based on bolus alba, vermillon (both as a replacement for the original bolus armenico), sugar and gummi arabicum.
I have to admit that as a vegetarian, I will stay with paper instead of using vellum.

And, uhm, yes, #7 is not suitable for minors and non-smokers
