Description
The core principle of FreedomIs the only notion to obey
If I have to name the core principles of Satanism, that sentence may as well be one of them. It's a poetic variation of one of the most important values I can name.
Hi, I am Lapis L'Azuri and I am a freelance Satanic artist today. Meaning, today I'm freelance, I'm a Satanist and perhaps even an artist in general.
Having that said, I'd lie if I say this was a commission. It was a request - and since it was for a very dear friend and since it's a work for the cause, I decided to do it properly, like a full commission piece.
So, instead, this is a gift. A very special and meaningful one. Also, one I enjoyed drawing to the fullest and I've rarely meant these words any more than this.
A possible reason is that it's a remake of a classical piece of art in my own style and take. Turns out I very much enjoy doing that. And especially when it holds such a deep meaning to me.
So, if this curiously looking creature up there is puzzling you, you can read on to learn a little about it.
The Baphomet is a mythical creature and symbol, to some even a deity, of ancient Pagan origin. It was made popular into Occultism and magick practices by Éliphas Lévi in the XIX century, and in later times it was adopted by Satanism as a central symbol and a patron of sorts. However, perhaps due to its uncertain and wavering origin or perhaps because of popular culture being such an ignorant bitch when it comes to anything Pagan, Occult or Satanic, the misconceptions about the Baphomet and what it stands for exceed actual knowledge about it by far. So I'll try to explain some basics. For a start, The Baphomet is a creature made up of symbolic elements and as such it carries a deep spiritual meaning. In fact, that's exactly what it is first and foremost - a spiritual symbol. Here is a list of the symbols incorporated and what they mean:
1. The Baphomet is both male and female, which is how it represents the spiritual duality of the soul, the two metaphorical aspects of Life which coexist in all of its forms. Like this, it is a symbol of the soul and the spiritual.
2. The Goat head (and usually hooves to match it) represent Life and its procreation as the Goat is an ancient folklore symbol of fertility. The horns in particular are especially strongly linked to that, though the horns on their own also symbolize spiritual / magickal power. The tail doesn't exist in the original design (if you've ever seen a goat you'd know they have a cute fluffy tail which is far too short to be showing like this), but then I have a thing for tails so I added it. Tails fucking rule.
3. The wings represent the wings of the soul and thus they are symbolic for spiritual power and freedom. In this case I drew Raven wings in particular which adds the symbol of intelligence, wisdom and magick to it.
4. The two Snakes spiraling around a rod (which is a variation of the Caduceus by the way) strongly represent Life. The Serpent has been a symbol of Life since the dawn of time, the Caduceus shape in particular is a representation of the main energy pathways of the soul and thus it symbolizes the Lifeforce. Nowadays a more modern take also links this particular shape of the two serpents to the double spiral of the molecule of DNA.
5. The hand positions represent the spiritual link to both the Earth and the Cosmos, which is essential to all Life on a spiritual level, as well as to achieving spiritual power. In the classical design there are inscriptions on the forearms of the Baphomet reading solve and coagula. However, since these are, to me, a reference to a wrong interpretation of the concept of alchemy I decided to not include them. Alchemy is about spirituality, not about chemistry.
6. The Pentagram on the forehead is an ancient symbol of many meanings. Generally, in spirituality it is symbolic of the five elements of the spirit. In this case, "inversed", it is also a welcome connection to the philosophy and symbolism of Satanism.
7. The torch between the Baphomet's horns represents intelligence, knowledge and spiritual enlightenment. I've seen people, notably Satanists, remove it from there, possibly to match the head to the pentagram form, but this is a huge mistake. Intelligence and wisdom are one of the most important symbols in the Baphomet, not to mention it's one of the core values of Satanism.
8. Finally, the Crescent Moon and the Eclipsed Sun are a symbol I altered a little more. In the classical design there are two crescent moons instead - one black and one white. I gather they probably symbolize the phases of the lunar cycle, which is rather relevant in magick. However, I wanted to make them represent Light and Darkness instead as this is much more fundamental and essential to the philosophy behind this piece. So I changed one of the Moons into a Sun. Then I eclipsed it as courtesy to my friend's strong taste for Darkness rather than Light. Plus, eclipses are mystical and totally awesome and I bet they are highly magickal as well. The star I added was a bonus.
Finally, I will dedicate a line to the inscription below.
In case it's not entirely clear, it reads: Nullus est deus præter me ipsum. This is Latin and it translates as follows: "There is no god but myself."
These are the words of Satan Lucifer I quote on every occasion I get because they are probably His most important message for you: Freedom. Freedom to all.
Freedom, however, can only be born within. That is the hidden and equally important part of the message.
Speaking of which, there are subtle deviations from the original design which are, indeed, a connection to Satanism I've incorporated, and also personally to Lucifer. One is the Pentagram which is "inversed" (in other words, as it should be), in honour of our faith, though quite frankly it downright looks and fits better like this anyway. Besides, this makes it into a much more powerful and pure symbol. The star beside the Eclipsed Sun is no other but the Morning Star (technically a planet, but hey), which has been perceived as an allegory to the Lightbringer - Lucifer. Finally, the Serpent, the Goat and the Raven - all 3 are among Lucifer's sacred animals. So that was the true reason for me to make these wings to be the wings of a Raven. In His honour.
IMPORTANT
Like I said, this is The Baphomet and The Baphomet is a mythical creature and an ancient symbol of Life.
The Baphomet, however, is NOT a Demon nor a Demonic creature, and it is definitely ***NOT*** a representation of Satan.
I cannot emphasize this enough.

I've seen thousands of art with Baphomet, but none is as detailed and so well made as this one! And being drawn in traditional style, only adds to its beauty.

Strong craftsmanship- and very informational! Ever since my friend decided to learn more about Satanism (first started as "Ayyy, let's be little different in religion lesson, ey?", honest confession) I started to question all main religions- even followed by questioning my own faith, gods dammit! And I'm happy about it! For so many years we are taught about how awful was Satanism and all Satanists kill kittens for sacrifice (when you think about, it's almost worse than calling Shamanism 'ignorant') As I read more about it, with the help of you, my eye opened and both me and my friend became... different. Our search turned more than "ayyy, edgy difference" and something more. Something about becoming more skeptic on what we hear and searching for our own faith, rather than following the "mainstream".
So (to wrap this highly-disorganized comment up) thanks for all the information and opening my eye, friend! Stay awesome

Yeah, many start as that. What's a bit sad is that many Satanists don't get any farther than that.... but I'm glad you guys did. And by the way, if you want to know more, you are always welcome to ask just about anything - just saying.
As for how Satanism is portrayed in popular culture.... *spits* I've run out of words to put my indignation about it into. They throw filth all over us, but then they are the wronged and offended ones just because we're different and dare to speak our minds and wear the symbols of our own faith. One of my best friends has seriously been asked how can he wear such an offensive symbol as the pentagram around his neck - but no one asks us how it offends US that every other moron here wears a cross, or they keep building them damned ch*rches or put crosses on top of mountains like the very mountain fucking belongs to them! And trust me it IS offending after all the lies their damned religion has spilled about OUR Gods, not to mention their so-called values undermine the very nature of a sober mind and healthy spirit. But no one cares about offending us. They're all about accusation of the same thing though.
For the record, sacrifices - including human sacrifices, say, on a wooden cross, on pyres or in dungeons by means of torture - are quite the judeo-xtian thing, not ours. There's nothing in the actual Satanic rites that is even vaguely alluding of sacrifice of any kind. Sadly not all Satanists are aware of that either....
Thank you very much! I am very happy to see people read and learn about it

I'd believe that. Sadly, sometimes it's true for many non-mainstream religions. Aww, it's good to know, friend! We appreciate it
Oh seriously? That's so awful to hear, don't know what to say. I mean, I lived from first hand how much religion can corrupt one's thinking but spilling that to straight up saying a different religion's symbol is offending- that's a whole something else!
Not to mention, many of their own special days and customs are *ahemstolenahem* "borrowed" from Paganism and even Shamanism- only to then tell us how stupid and ignorant we are because we don't do them for "DA ONE AND ANLY GAWD"
(Masterful marketing 101: When those heathens turn out to be more clever and intelligent than expected, just kill a few of them- by few, I mean a few thousand. It works wonders)

Yeah, it is.
Indeed. It's basically: "spread lies about that religion and then hate them because of the lies we spread". *ponders* Now just how humane that is. I mean, it's human. I doubt any other species is capable of such hypocrisy.
Oh not only stolen - corrupted. Like, take their "easter" - as a very prominent and (to me) very painful example. So we have this NATURAL spring celebration about the renewal of Nature, the awakening of Life, fertility and the moment everything bursts into bloom and comes alive and starts propagating again, and basically - of Life. Right! So we make it into a glorification of cruel human sacrifice on a cross Seriously? Well, then don't blame me when I'd rather pass. Not to mention they're perfectly oblivious that the very name of their celebration comes from the name of the Goddess Ishtar / Astaroth (because she IS indeed a Goddess of fertility and life). But wait, what? But we said she's a Demon. Ohhhh, wait. Now it makes sense.
I think we can go on like this forever....

Urrrgh, I know, it's frusturating! And then we next generations are taught that "ooooh Pagans/Shamans became Christian/Muslim because our religions are sooo similar!!1!" and we live with that lie for the rest of our lives....
(And no, definitely not salty to the education system and toxic religion I grew up in. Naah, never, being salty is for the weak)
*sighs* We can. But it's almost... Tiring. It's frusturating and due to this, you get exhausted if you go too long getting frusturated and point out everything wrong with the mainstream religions, along with every stolen thing

lapis-lazuri In reply to Unistonen [2017-07-06 08:41:19 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's about it. Although you're skipping that small part where they burn Pagans on pyres or torture them in dungeons because apparently their religion was not only not so similar, but also very evil - much unlike the utterly good xtian religion, which happens to torture and burn alive innocent people.
Toxic is exactly what it is. Toxic on many levels.
Yeah, and it's kinda pointless too. Neither of us two is unaware of these things, so there's not much of a gain in discussing it. The problem most of the time is, how to point them out to those who still blindly follow said toxic lies. The most difficult thing is to make the oblivious realize they are, indeed, oblivious - and need to do something about it. I've tried.... and that, my friend, is much more frustrating than talking to you about just how wrong it is.

*throws herself around like a fish due to anger*
I also had some trying-to-discuss moments with christians, mostly putting parallels with Paganism and even some points about the whole Shamanism&Paganism. Result? Many bad looks and got kicked out from the house I was staying in, who was a highly christian household (who also sent me to a christian camp, telling me that it's just a normal camp with loads of fun. Super long story, but that just pissed me off, just saying) It is very frustrating indeed, especially when they literally have no interest in listening and just shoo you off. *sighs* Hard times

O.O You serious?! They did that?!?!? Wtf.... So much about tolerance and being humane. They're humane only if you obey. If you don't.... well, we all know what happens. But fine. It's in my religion's philosophy to retaliate. Not the sheep bastard's "the other cheek" bullshit. You kick me out, I blow your house.
