Description Remember the Moon events back in January? There was a Blue Moon coupled with a Moon Eclipse, a truly rare occurrence.
Back then I wanted to draw something for the occasion, only I wasn't feeling really up for it.
But the idea was there and I kept it for March - because at least the Blue Moon was going to repeat itself.

So, the idea was this. A scene of Full Moon magic from my own world. Only, in my own world the term Blue Moon would be much more literal. Why? Because in addition to the regular White Moon Silvenlen, the kind of which we know all too well, I also have another one - a much smaller satellite with an eccentric orbit, but unlike her big sister, it is velveteen blue in color. I call it Neyquenlex. I hadn't drawn it for a long long time, and this seemed like the perfect occasion. I managed to draw most of it today within a couple of hours. Right on time :3
So yeah, not much story behind this one, just the occasion. Although technically, this can be counted as a sort of illustration related to my book. This is a scenery from a place called Indelien - The Morning Valley. Legendary place of magic which, without spoiling much, our main characters are trying to find. So these are the sloping meadows of Indelien facing the Eastern Sea under the Full Blue Moon in a truly beautiful magical blue night. The bushes by the way are shining with their own light. I call them star bushes, an old idea of mine. It seems like these rare plants are abundant in Indelien.

So yeah, not much to tell here. Happy Blue Moon and enjoy the blue magic.

Drawn in Ps CS6 with a Wacom Intuos4.
Original size: 3600 2400 px. About 4 hours.

I couldn't write over the few months due to busy stuff but I do see quite a lot of improvement on your digital art lately, especially on landscapes. Gradients/glow needs some more work but overall, more finer details and good lighting. Awesome stuff here!

Well thanks but.... What? Gradients and glow? Why?

Like the glow around the moon and the creature. I feel like they could be bit smoother in terms of blending. (It might just be my taste tho but I do feel a smoother transition of shades would give more impact on the lighting)
Btw, do you just use the default brushes in PS? (out of curiousity)

I know they can be smoother, I just don't want them to be. I despise smooth gradients in digital paintings, they feel unnatural against the brush-strokes of all the rest, and at least to me they just point out the unsmoothness of everything else. I avoid them on purpose. Well, I guess I've overdone it a little around the moon, but that's maybe because the blues are a little whimsical to work with. I struggled a bit with that glow. But the glow around the unicorn I am quite satisfied with, even if it isn't smooth, but it's like I wanted it to be. I wanted it to appear a little cloud-like, like an aura, not like a smooth uniform glow of a neon lamp.

Yes, I use only the default brushes. Actually most of the time I use only one brush. This time I tried another for the grasses, and I used an old acquaintance-brush of mine from when I was little, for the star bush. It's not ideal, but it works.

Hmm, I see your point. Of course your vision is important in that matter as well.
Have you tried using some external brushes? I used to stick with PS default ones too but after a while, they started to feel too "plastic" for my taste. Then I saw that different brushes can actually help break that and give a more traditional look (and give textures tons more easily and better.)

I don't use more than half of the shit you see here (especially the foliage ones, not my taste at all unless I do super quick concepts or bored as heck) but the basic ones usually give you everything you need and more. It's all free as well, which is extra nice. Setup is also very easy, and you can delete the ones you don't need.

I know but.... I don't really like this kind of thing. I like my media to be as straightforward and simple to use as possible, so that I can think less of it and focus entirely on the vision in my head and transferring it into the picture. That's why I stick to pencils and the most basic brush - because it is predictable, I know what to expect of it in any moment, I don't have to think of which way it is directed and so forth. In fact, that brush is very much like a pencil as well. And I prefer to render my details by hand. It feels more natural. Yeah, it's probably stupid and in the end the results aren't very epic unless I put a lot of time, work and effort into it, but.... I dunno, guess that's my style?

Maybe I try some more brushes one day, but I just don't feel like experimenting with it right now. Thanks for the suggestion though

It's also very a-okay. Comfort is also one thing in arting.
Hopefully it was helpful tho! Have fun experimenting whenever you do

Thank you And thank you very much for your kind words to begin with. I tend to overreact to criticism sometimes.... (it's one of the reasons why I didn't become a professional artist) But I very much appreciate your words. I hope my digital art grows better, landscapes are something that still needs a lot of work.
