Description Look what I found buried in my digital archives.

That's a small piece for a project I stepped into a couple of years ago, but it happened right afterΒ I had started a new job and so I discontinued my participation, even if it was an interesting theme, as I was still adapting to a new job and couldn't quite get my mind around a side project as well. Or well, perhaps the actual reason was that I so much dislike to be told how to draw, and this lead artist (who wasn't really an artist) was a tiiiiny bit too pushy for my taste to stay around. I tell you what, if I don't enjoy my drawing work for somebody, it simply doesn't work. That's why I cannot be a professional artist actually.
But anyway, the project was for a tabletop card game in a sci-fi genre, if I remember correctly, it was sort of a cosmic war between 4 fundamentally different races, each of whom would incorporate a set of its own unique mechanics. The designer of the whole thing was a friend of mine and Hell, he had awesome ideas. So, I've pretty much forgotten what the other races were about (think one was basically the grey aliens.... sorta), but the one I remember about was a race of sentient plants who could manipulate their genome and like this evolve different forms and mechanisms as their living substitute of conventional technology - which is such an AWESOME concept. Needless to say I joined as an artist-to-be (and visual designer) for this particular race. Sadly, I didn't really continue.... perhaps if it were to happen now, I would have, but eh, that was 2 years ago.

So this little thingie is the picture for a card. Basically it's a gigantic tree which could grow up so tall that it would expand its crown above the atmosphere - and yes, I am very well aware of the problems with that, being a botanist myself, but hey, it's a game. The thing is, my friend's concept of the game included one unit card for each race which would be an orbital station - so that giant tree was the plants' substitute for that, and I find it a very nice idea actually. So yeah, basically it's how they colonize a planet and also how they spawn some units into orbit - so that's what these huge pods are for, and the seeds that seem to come from out of them are actually a living plant starship-equivalents. I dunno, I personally loved the concepts into this race. Sadly I didn't get to really work much on them. After this first card (which was sort of proof-of-concept for me as an artist for the species) I did start working on another but.... never even got to finish it. But anyway. It was long ago, but I still kinda like this one. Figured I could finally share it.

Well for an old test piece or bit of concept art it seems, I really like this piece! I love the soft cool tones in the background with the warm soft golden light in the foreground in the tree. A really nice combination. Even with the warm yellow light I can still feel the chill... really awesome to get that impression.Β

Also pretty cool idea from your friend there... and nice that you were able to support them even temporarily or until you moved into other things. I still like this end result you have shared with us. I really like these color schemes and sort of small snap shot of a setting and Tim me it really does feel like some other world. I really love this.

Thank you so much! Then I've done my job even better than I thought. It was kinda nice to draw something as different as this, once again. Besides, I'm kinda proud of how I solved the obvious problem of showing the size of these trees - and still do one from up close. Thank you!

Nice, I really like the colours and composition in this! I can definitely see it working as a card in a tabletop game.

I'm getting vibes of Yggdrasil or the Hangtree from Larry Niven's Rainbow Mars. Multiple species of alien plants in symbiosis with each other to form a biological space elevator.

As a matter of fact that's what I was trying to remember - if the race from my friend's game were actually several symbiotic species or just one who could modify themselves as they pleased creating a number of different forms that look like entirely different species, but aren't really. Could be both, I don't remember. There was another in an older game though, again symbiotic sentient plants, having evolved to mimic other species and this way learn and advance their own race. If I got their logic right, they actually dominate their homeworld, but not by force, but by having established symbiotic relationships with a zillion other local species, which is how they ended up being a complex race of many species really. Which is indeed a very nice concept, although to me it doesn't quite capture the essence of plant life because our "peaceful" green beauties are nothing but peaceful, but actually a kingdom of warmongering scoundrels who wrestle incessantly with each other and where brute force isn't quite enough they unleash powerful chemicals on each other waging what is essentially a neverending global chemical warfare right beneath our feet And damn, sorry for rambling, but I'm fascinated by all thing plant so yeah, sci-fi in that direction really excites me

I remember you showing me this back then. I did wonder what became of the project. I still think this drawing is pretty cool.

Thanks. I actually don't know what happened to it.... if they even continued working on it.... might ask though.
