Description
It's this time of the year again. No, I don't mean your holidays. I mean December 4th. International Cheetah Day.You know, cheetahs. The cute little spotty things from Africa. They are still endangered. In fact, they have been endangered all along, throughout the past 365 days that haven't been their International Day. And chances are they will be for the next 364 too, until the next one. Why: 1) because of habitat fragmentation and loss to humans - actually a global threat for countless wild species, humans tend to destroy all natural habitats while expanding their artificial ones; 2) because of human farmers killing them to protect their lifestock - or thinking they do so while in fact cheetahs are very rarely responsible for livestock loss, but they are nevertheless murdered for it; 3) because of illegal trade with cubs for pets - cubs are being kidnapped and the few who survive are being illegally sold by guess who, humans again. Add to that also: 4) the critically low genetic diversity in cheetahs - this is due to historical bottleneck events in their population, to which however humans have also contributed a lot; 5) the fact that cheetahs are in a disadvantegous position when directly confronted by other local predators - for which reason they cannot thrive in protected areas where competing predators are abundant and thus they are forced to live predominately closer to the humans who, as shown already, are such a favourable factor for them. Seems like the odds are simply against them. That's a pity.
The cheetah is the fastest land animal, capable of running at up to 112 km/h. It is also considered to be the most effective solitary hunter on land. It is highly specialized, its body slender and built for extreme sprint, much lighter than the dominating predators in its habitat. A cheetah can fell smaller prey compared to lions and leopards, but it is far more successful than them in hunting. However, due to its smaller size, its prey is often stolen away by larger or more numerous predators. That and the fact that both lions and leopards chase cheetahs and their cubs and seek to kill them, makes areas populated by the larger cats - such as natural parks and reserves - unfavourable for the cheetah. It is a remarkable animal, specialized for effective hunting, evolved into an amazing sprinter.... and sadly paying a high price for it.
I admit, the cheetah hits my personal soft spot in many ways. First, because it's a cat. Then because it is very unique and different even among cats, because of its slender but strong body, truly amazing in its capabilities - an astonishing masterpiece of Nature and example of what it is capable of. It is amazing what it has achieved in its evolution, it is amazing to watch it sprint - nothing can compare to that sight, and it is such a powerful testimony of the perfection evolution can reach, of how life defies all limits. It is also a very indicative example of how indiscriminative is the devastation caused by human hands onto the natural world. The cheetah evolved to the verges of physical possibility and yet it is facing extinction because.... why really? Because they are vile predators that must die; or because farming and industry are more important than wildlife; or because they are so pretty you want them as pets; or because - and that is the real reason - humanity hardly cares. Biodiversity is not profitable. Set on your scales against money, every species is doomed to lose the chase. Now you can tell me you evolved into something higher than cheetahs and thus achieved world domination fairly - and yeah, it's sad they will go exinct, but isn't that the way of Nature - more adaptive species push away the less adaptive ones. Sure. But dear Crown Of Evolution, you haven't evolved into anything which can survive without the natural world around it. As the old saying goes, the day when man cuts down the last tree and kills the last deer they will realize money cannot be eaten. My logic is, if the human is such a crown of evolution for its intelligence, it should be able to realize this obvious plain truth before said final and irreversible event. So far, that does not happen.
So, now you are getting ready to celebrate your whatevers. Now, despite the pending depletion of natural resources, you are waiting with bated breath for the next i-something which you will only use for a couple of months before you throw it away for the next one. Now you are about to celebrate the peak and absolute triumph of your consumer society and culture - yes, I AM, in fact, speaking of your holycrap December 25. And now one species is struggling for survival. In fact, it is not one. It is thousands. Doesn't seem quite fair, does it? It isn't.
Don't worry about them. There are pictures of them. Your children and their children will watch the pictures on the super modern i-things of the future.... provided that there is future for them at all. This might be the final sprint for cheetahs and many more, but then your own is not set for too far ahead along the line.

2B - 6B on 30 x 20 cm paper. 3-4 hours perhaps. Quite a speed drawing really.... Nevertheless, tradition is kept.
Edit: some details added and somewhat refined.

Absolutely stunning work - capturing the beauty, elegance and unique spirit of these stunning felines - truly one of my all-time favourite animals that I've had something of an obsession over since as long as I could remember.
I agree with everything in your comments here - but I won't launch into a rant of my own as I think we are on the same proverbial wavelength to start with.
I love the dynamism and energy in this piece you conveyed through the simple-but-very-effective background, and I also love the little variations in the facial features and expressions of the cheetahs, and the life that shows in their eyes - as if pleading to other viewers to recognise their plight and for the ignorant masses to see the intelligence and soul of these amazing animals.
(I had intended to make something this year for Cheetah Day, but alas, placements sucked all life and energy out - but I adore your piece. Besides, I suppose even if I'm stupid-late and post at another time in the year when I get around to making something, it doesn't need to be on a specified day to help raise awareness. *and Hell, if any of my art was ever good enough to sell for prints, that's what it would go towards...*)

Thank you so much!
This what you say really makes me glad because it's exactly what I was going for. I hope others can see it as well. It's the message.
As for the background, it was a good hit because it was both easier to do and giving a very good and fitting effect. Sometimes my mind comes up with good ideas.
Thank you once again. Yes, I strongly suspect we agree fully on these things. And aww, cheetahs are special to me too :3

You're very welcome indeed! ^^
And damn, you certainly succeeded in that as I got the message very clearly from this drawing, so congrats. I also really hope that others can see it as clearly as I can here. <3
It certainly was a great move indeed - and ha, I'd say you come up with good ideas frequently. ^^ This is certainly amongst them.
You're welcome indeed - and yes, I didn't think I needed to explain it fully in words as I felt we both would be on the same proverbial page.
They certainly are special indeed and will always hold a deep personal place. All creatures are magnificent in their own ways but we each have some that stand out especially...

Cheetahs! Ah and for International Cheetah Day, this is fantastic! There is indeed something about their spirit that has always stood out to me from when I was little. They have such a spirit of perseverance to me...which is awe inspiring. But also I have to agree with what you have explained there. Also been thinking a lot about how I plan to do December this year I'm sure you know what I mean... defo gonna be different from the rest of my life... But back to the Cheethas...I just agree wholeheartedly with everything you have said about the folly of humanity thinking they are more than they are. And all forms of conservation have been particularly sensitive to me since this bloody election. You know this bloody idiot doesn't give a shit about conservation or wildlife... the fight (at least in my country) to protect nature was already an uphill battle. Now... As I've said before makes me deeply ashamed of this land I was born unto. I really hope I can get out...I can't stand living with these kinds of people anymore. *sorry a bit of a personal ramble there...*

Understandable. They are truly unique.
Mmmm.... may I suggest a real holiday to celebrate? Cuz that shit-of-a-mas they celebrate, especially the way they celebrate it, just.... *spits with disgust*
I don't know much detail, I know he is set against anti-climate-change measures.... and that is infuriating enough. I don't know much more.... but what you say makes me worry.... Your country takes up half a freaking continent.... and there is a lot of wildlife left there, much more than in Europe actually. I hope it's still there after that moron-in-a-suit gets eaten by the worms....

ah well I'd love to hear your thoughts. Though...as of now since I don't want to rush into anything (because such things are very important to me) this year I think I'm just going to focus on the spirit of Winter itself, be thankful for it and what it brings. And just enjoy it for the sake of it. To try and appreciate it more for what it is rather than what society tells me it is.
Yes and the thing is, he disrespects the American people, the disabled, veterans and all minorities. How much less respect will he give to our nature and all within it? I feel very sick, and deeply deeply betrayed by the people I'm this land. In some ways maybe I already did feel that, but this...this is much deeper and like shoving a hot iron against a pre-existing third degree burn.

Well, I was going to suggest Winter Solstice anyway. That's the original Pagan holiday (which xnity stole to make up its whatever btw), and there's nothing more wintry than that :3
That's a point.... Well, you guys over there have the sense of community and country and this is somehow important to you, while completely nonexistent here.... I cannot really feel such betrayal from people I have no attachment to. But that's another topic. The damage he can, and probably will, do is very real.

Yeah that's what I was thinking.
Eh, well... I mean I've never felt particularly proud to be an American and as I've said before, it's never really felt like 'home.' But, in light of that I am grateful for what I have here, I may not have had much affection for this place that is 'my country' but at least I didn't have a particular outstanding resentment towards it... But now I do. I feel a betrayal from other living organisms weather I have an attachment to them or not. They should understand and respect the fundamental rights to life itself but...seems this just further proves the point that they don't. And by them I mean humans of course...it's just...of course I've been aware of these tendencies before, but when people freely choose to elect someone like that to represent America as a whole, and it's people.
He doesn't respect the American people and just seems to have no respect for life. Human/nature/business...whichever way you'd like to look at it. So even at surface level...if he doesn't respect us, why should any other country respect us??? Pft... Also because some of the people who choose to put him there... *growls* I am biologically related to, or were some very close friends. So that is very personal. It's been a month now I think but I'm still smarting from it.

The winter solstice is His holiday, you know? X3
I see.... well, I can understand all that regardless. I guess after so many years of watching the idiotic mess and absurd bullshit in Bulgaria, I've grown a thick skin for that kind of crap and stopped caring. There was a time I cared a lot.... not even too long ago, but what happened in the recent years was so absurd that.... I just pulled the fuck to everything, as we kinda say here.
And maybe you won't believe it, but the absurdity that has been happening here kinda outmatched the absurdity of America electing Trump.

Yes I remember you telling me before.
Makes sense. And in my case it's not that I was immune to it before...but this is just the ultimate last straw. I won't tolerate for it to go further than this. I won't stay here and watch that happen. Somehow I'm going to get out of here, and I think you may already know about some options I'm considering. But the more I think about it the more I know I refuse to live in this place. I can believe it's worse, what you hint at there...and it only makes me sick, and make my insides ache for you as my friend in a place like that... I hope you can find a way out.

I can't really keep my mouth shut X3
Well, I've kinda found a way out.... it's a bit not in either of 3 spatial dimensions, but it works fine for me. It's just, I've seen so much nonsense and absurdity here I don't get impressed with it anymore. Though every next wilderness they cement through and every next forest they bring down makes me wanna blow them all to bits.... but there's really no escaping that, not in this wretched world.... wherever you go.

It's totally fine, I blabla all the time too.
Ah well, so long as it works for you then... And I see your point. I hate to admit it but in light of that to fight it seems pointless
but we fight it anyway. The only thing we can do...

Awesome work! the poses especially look amazing, they are so hard to do as well *has tried drawing a running cheetah front the front and epically failed* I have a soft spot (no pun intended) for the cheetah as well, probably my favorite out of all the big cats. they indeed stand out among the other big cats
also what you said in the description it still amazes me that there isn't more action taken in preserving nature, even with the shitload of research, facts and signs that shit is going down the drain O.o

Thank you! I had good references. The main challenge was to fit 4 into a single sheet (don't ask me why, because I must make my life difficult), I sketched and resketched the three to the right a dozen times But yeah.... I feel very much affected by those things, especially lately again.... nothing justifies the way Nature is being treated. But it will always prevail, mankind will sooner or later pay for its neglect and arrogance.
By the way, the cheetah is from the side of small cats: lynxes, pumas, wild cats etc.

you're welcome ^^ hahaha because for the sake of epicness, four cheetahs in one piece \m/
yeah.. I'm pretty sure humanity will destroy itself one day, be it by war or running out of resources or maybe something else nature will indeed prevail, even after the shit humans are causing. :'D
ah they are ? makes more sense, I always see people refer to cheetahs as big cats but they aren't really that big

Well, it's more like I just couldn't pick just one to draw. And then that idea for the artwork came....
The question is how much of everything else it will destroy.
It's isn't really about size. Size is very unstable in evolution and classification strives to go as close to evolutionary relations as possible.
