Searching for the right words...this is very cold and distant with the silver and black tones yet slightly uplifting with the soft pastel colors. All in all this is beautiful. I'll have to explore that formula.
Beautiful...

very nice! I really like it. my only picky critique is the black isn't rounded off like the 'pipes'

There's no way I know of to round those corners. If you know something I don't, pass it along!

Hmmm...I should ask around and see if there's a way to do that. It would make things really interesting if I could be that specific in my masking. You made me think about a new idea.

This is the newest one here in Minneapolis: [link]
This is just a few blocks from where I live. BTW, both buildings are art museums, thank goodness. No one has to live in these things.

These are just plain ugly! I guess someone had to like them to actually build them. I know I've seen some art I thought was disgusting but others loved it, maybe its fitting that they are art museums. Ugh!

LaPurr In reply to subee [2006-09-22 01:18:51 +0000 UTC]
I agree that they're ugly, but they've gotten a lot of attention for looking this way. I have a feeling that's what the architects wanted: talk, one way or another. The second one, The Walker Art Center, is better on the inside than on the outside and they have a wonderful huge exhibit space on the first floor that's incredible. I saw a Chuck Close retrospective there last year that was perfect in that space. So the outside is for the talk, the inside really is a museum.

subee In reply to LaPurr [2006-09-22 01:24:52 +0000 UTC]
Well I'm sure they succeeded in getting attention! And the Walker Art Center looked like it had plenty of space to house a large art collection. So, I guess its all good after all!

It better be, with the money they spent and the controversy they encountered. People were up in arms when they saw the design...and rightfully so.
My favorite museum here is the Minneapolis Institute of Art. [link] This is the old facade, but there's a new addition off to the left and perpendicular to this. I love the old part the best, even inside. It's a wonderful place and has some incredible pieces. I'm lucky in that both museums are very close to where I live; in walking distance, in fact.

Now, that's the look I'm more familiar with! Looks impressive! St. Louis only has 1 real art museum and that's about 45 min away! We went once when they had a Van Gogh exhibit.....really nice! They also have a sculpture park in the area too, I've never been, but I intend to see it someday!

LaPurr In reply to subee [2006-09-22 02:08:45 +0000 UTC]
The Walker has a sculpture garden, four blocks from here and across the street from a great park.
[link] and [link] Neither of these really does it justice, though. I love the giant spoon with the cherry! I live four blocks to the left of the first shot.
When I was a teenager, I always said I wanted to live in this neighborhood and when I came back here after my travels all over hell and creation, I moved straight here. I love the neighborhood: it's right on the edge of downtown, has tons of restaurants and coffee shops, is a place filled with older apartment buildings and little shops, and as I said, is close to the two big museums. I couldn't be in a better place.

that spoon and cherry are great! sounds like a really nice place to be! we keep moving farther away from the city.....my husband wants peace and quiet, but he also wants the stores and restaurants, and then wonders why he has to drive so far to find them!

That's the thing: you can't have it both ways. I'll take the noise and the concrete for the ease of access. I don't drive, so this really is the perfect place for me. I can walk or bus anywhere from where I am.

That's cool! I'm a country girl so I'd stay away from the inner city area but the suburbs are okay with me. The thing with moving farther out is that the city always expands and you're back where you left!

Boy, that's the truth, isn't it? Places that were country when I was a kid are built-up suburbs and housing developments now. I wouldn't even recognize some places if it weren't for the highways and using them as landmarks. Amazing how fast the cities expand.

I hate to see the countryside and farms disappearing as fast as they do. We still need food! We need to learn to start building up and not out! But, our minds haven't gotten there yet!

I just hope we wake up before its too late. Dreams drive ambition and increased lifestyles, but our "dreams" could become our downfall as a world leader in the future.
