Description
I made this for the "Make One, Share One" competition. For the contest, I ordered a 10 x 15 matte print of this painting. It comes with a certificate of authenticity, which you can see here:I was thinking about Myst, which I often do, and I was thinking of some of the many reasons I love Myst.
One of the reasons I love Myst is because of focus on 'learning,' on being curious and finding out things. I read the Book of Atrus when I was in 7th grade, it was the first time I really found a positive role model for a scientist. Atrus and Anna both try tobe mindful of the world around them, try to understand things through observation and experimentation. That's science. I wanted to be like them.
Anyway, so when I was in college studying biology, I often thought of Atrus working at his desk like this. And I think of Anna's words:
"There is never an end to learning, Atrus. There are more things in this universe, yes, and more universes, than we could ever hope to know."

This is so beautiful. I've been a fan of your work since I accidentally discovered the Anna, Atrus & Flame picture on Pixiv ("Let's type Myst in here and lol at the resul... WAIT BEST BOA FANART EVER who is this person have they done more") I think it's a great style for stylizing Myst characters... universal, in a way. This piece is beautiful, your young Atrus is as adorable as it gets (ie, totally canon
) and aaaaaw.
Totally agreed on the comment too. For me, that positive, placid, all-encompassing scientific curiosity was something that had been there as a child but had somehow got lost growing up and Myst has been a way to rediscover it. What do we see?

Thanks a lot!
i like that, "positive placid all-encompassing scientific curiosity." Yes, the "what do you see" theme is so great. All about mindfulness ... paying attention to the natural world ... I really like that.
Thank you for all your comments! They made me very happy. It's really great meeting another myst fan on deviantart. I follow u!
I do think the miyazaki style works for myst. It just makes sense! My (not-so) secret plan is to someday make a Book of Atrus animated film.
It's one of my life goals!

Your style is becoming so refined! The simplicity and elegance of this is great- I can't stop looking at the shading on his hand.

Thanks Shoomlah! I'm trying to get better at painting ... it's so hard! >_<
I was just now admiring your submission for the myst fanclub contest! I love it so much. I agree the falling man is hard to think about ... i always think how awkward it would be to hold open a book and put your hand on it while falling ...
