Description A few people asked about my process, I thought that my drawings might speak for themselves since the process is a bit vanilla, but I thought that I might as well.

Feel free to ask any questions about it, I'll shed as much light on it as I can, given the deep enigma of mystery that my process beholds.

The flats, are they over or under the sketch?

This is gold. I'm having trouble finishing sketches, think this might shed some light on a solution. Thank you.

Ps: could you possibly give me an estimate on how long each stage takes you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

larolaro In reply to Gearless [2012-07-21 09:19:28 +0000 UTC]

The sketch stage takes up maybe 80% of the time for the whole process. I don't spend much time on the colours or lighting at all.

SO you use the whole monotone volume + colour in overlay?

Gotta say yours looks better than most people who do the same

How do you apply your flats? Is it just a separate layer set to multiply, or do you use different layer or brush modes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

larolaro In reply to GavinMichelli [2012-06-21 21:59:48 +0000 UTC]

What I normally do is create a silhouette layer underneath my drawing then I create a layer for each new colour, then using clipping mask for all of the colour layers I mask them all down to the silhouette layer so that they all conform to just the one layer's edges. After that I set my lines to multiply over the colour layers and voila!

Awesome, but how come you didn't go the extra (short) mile and add some sharper lines to certain areas?

larolaro In reply to marvelleftw [2012-06-21 21:53:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, because this image depicts the process of how I created that illustration...I'm sorry, I find it difficult to respond to the condescension in your comment.

Damn, I never thought you'd get it like that man..
It's was more peer-2-peer if anything, it's just that although your sense of shape, line-weight, color scheme and overall lighting has developed an original-and-awesome-to-look-at style, in my own eyes' esthetic the lines are a bit softer than what I'd want to see in a "finished piece", and it's hard to label this a "polished sketch" when it needs so little, thinner darker lines around the eyes, maybe some hair strands.. Sorry to assume that you intended for this to be a finished piece (hence my comment) but I figured it is since you're showing people the process. I really do come out sounding condescended, argh.
Rest assured my comment is not destructive in nature, it is inspired only by curiosity, rather than the usual constructive advice background of such comments.
Cheers man, wishing you a great weekend

I think going further could change the style and aesthetics of the drawing. And in my humble opinion that's the creator's decision. One decides how far the details will go, and I think Laro's way of working doesn't need much detail, in fact the gesture in his drawings is what makes them so appealing and different from others.

Both opening statements are true. Only the artist has a why.
