The Kerberos Initiative, more commonly known as Cerberus, is a paramilitary organization originally formed from inhouse military research branch and special forces unit of the Federation Military Intelligence Department, which incorporates a number of formerly separate research institutes and paramilitary agencies.

The primary goal of Cerberus is to protect the security interest of the Terran Federation and by greater extent ensuring the survival of humanity as a whole. The organization specializes in clandestine operations, covert tactics, and paranormal weapon developments to counter any outside threats that could potentially harm the Federation's existence.
Jointly formed with the Turian Spectre Illyia Verpine, (Ret.) Sergeant Jack Harper, and General Carl Jenkins, after what is known as the Monolith Incident. Its top researchers when it started were many Turian Hierarchy soldiers and researchers who studied the Monolith artifact.
Cerberus already has accomplished much in its short existence, preventing the Gennatine Genocides, and collecting nearly thirty metric tons of dangerous paranormal materials, Cerberus' reach is far, and its support both in the Federation and Citadel circles gives it wide reaching powers to do what is necessary to protect the galaxy from paranormal threats.
Cerberus's personnel includes ex-Federation military personnel and mercenaries from human-originated PMCs who have previously served their terms. Prior to the Third Bug War, this task force spent most of its time cooperating with Turian Blackwatch Intelligence Service, the Turian Lily Order, and Citadel Spectre Agency in inspecting Eastern colonies for anomalies based on research of ancient paranormal objects of interest.
However, despite their very efficient methods of operation, both Cerberus and Federation Military Intelligence have occasionally failed in incidents related to matters in the more unstable regions like Alliance space and the Traverse due to a manpower shortage following the aftermath of the 3rd Bug War and the limited resources they were provided with.
