A class of large Destroyers used by the Terran Federation during the Second Bug War, they were designed to be capable of sinking opposing enemy light cruisers and destroyers by using their superior speed, alongside powerful rapid-firing artillery and missile payload. Designed as an escort and exploitation ship, it was also the first Federation Destroyer pattern to be envisioned for long range operations in mind, and as a general purpose military vessel capable of performing multiple roles in combat. These ships formed the backbone of the Federation Fleet alongside their larger light cruiser cousins, continually upgraded and improved to enhance their combat capabilities throughout the war.
Overall, the Alesia design is fundamentally light, with a lightly armored hull, that was still an upgrade compared to the relatively unarmored Methuselah, which it displaced. Powered by a high-output reactor which drives the three engine nacelles. The main armament of the ship consists of six fixed high-density 203mm laser cannons in a ventral bow section as well as two Auger DP (Dual Purpose) Laser turrets, these new laser cannons are capable of firing an ultraviolet beam rapidly, thanks to the use of separate energy capacitors located in the ship's barbettes instead of having to connect the power source directly to the ship's reactor. Each of the main guns can also elevate independently for the turret to be able to engage with multiple targets, whether it be smaller fighter craft or larger enemy ships.
Theoretically, the Auger beam can effectively bypass all forms of kinetic barriers and can attain a very high penetration capability at close range against ablative armor due to having higher output than the previous laser designs, making it one of the better laser weapons ever deployed onboard a Terran warship, although these weapons were prohibitively expensive to produce, leading to many Alesia class ships being mounted with the cheaper twin anti-ship spray missile launchers in place of the laser turrets for the first decade of its deployment.
Despite being officially classified as an FAS (Fast Attack Ship), they are a lot closer to Destroyer Flotilla Leaders in terms of their specific roles, with roomy layouts and powerful armements, they are perfectly fit for leading corvettes and destroyer flotillas. These vessels still remain one of the largest destroyer class warships ever built by the Federation, its large size future proofing it for perhaps a century to come.
This is good, as the emphasis on large destroyer designs had left the Terran Federation with a deficit in smaller, more modern, and perhaps most perturbingly, more economical escort vessels. In order to rectify this problem, the Doolittle and the Mitchell classes were drawn up and ordered to be able to serve alongside the larger Alesia and light cruisers as part of a battlefleet formation. However these two designs would not be ready for service until the Third Bugs War was over.
