Description
The M29 Grizzly Heavy Infantry Fighting Vehicle is the standard "Battle Taxi" of the Systems Alliance during the Batarian Wars. It was the first Alliance domestically designed AFVs to enter operational service. The Grizzly was designed as a response to the Alliance Marine Corps specification for an armored combat vehicle that can combine good firepower and high mobility to one design. Designed to operate in tandem with the heavier short-ranged Susanoo MBT, the Grizzly excellent in long-term planetary campaigns where its operational endurance and good firepower provided a strategic necessity for mechanized infantry units.
A relatively simple and modular chassis that can be tuned to different configurations based on the operator's requirements, Grizzlies helped reduced the strain on the Alliance's logistic chains which were limited by the vast distances. However the Grizzly's bulk and weight made it unsuitable for rapid deployment across the Alliance's expanding sphere of influence, which spurred the development of the more advanced XM35 IFV to replace the Grizzly in this role in a near future.
The basic Grizzly chassis is comparmentalized into three sections, the rear infantry compartment which held 6 persons, the middle compartment which were used for housing the unmanned main turret or alternatively additional supply cargo holds in the converted VT7 civilian-grade model. The 3-manned crew compartment of the vehicle is located in the front armoured capsule, alongside with its primary electric motors engines and the power cell systems. On the military models, there is also a soft-kill Derby Active Protection System suite for disrupting infrared ATGMs and guided mutions against the vehicles located on the left of the vehicle's driver's hatch, although this was absent on the unarmed VT7 civilian model and was instead replaced by a communication antenna suite.
Being one of the most successful Alliance's AFV design to seen exports, the Grizzly military models are widely used by the Systems Alliance and various private military corporations and independent contractors like those of Morita Arms Concerns, Elanus Risk Control Services etc etc. The Alliance would also supplied these vehicles to Terminus Warlords for cooperations and handling local security issues to maintain stability in these regions. Early variant was armed with an automatic 75mm Morita lightweight howitzer turret, although later variants can be upgunned to a 105mm MAC cannon turret. An unarmed civilian model also exists, designated as the VT7 APC, it is widely exported to Citadel Space for various civilian contractors and largely devoid of the equipments usually come with the military-grade models.
