Description
Based on designs from Roughnecks:Starship Troopers Chronicles and Starship Troopers moviesDescription:
TAC Fighters are the standard Terran aerospace combat and attack crafts. They are capable of atmospheric superiority as well as space superiority roles. They are used throughout the Bugs War for Combat Air Patrols as well as ground attack, primarily to combat the threats of Transport Bugs and Hopper Bugs.
--F-76 Thunderbolt--
The Thunderbolt is the main space fighter of the Federation's Fleet. It handles enemy fighters easily, and though it is not as maneuverable as the new interceptors, pilots love it for one reason alone: Survivability. Most of the fighters in the TAC doctrine have a tough armored shell made from Ceramic Composite Reactive Armor which is used on ship armor plates. The fighter can take a serious beating and still manage to make it back to friendly territory. Some have looked into the history books, and began calling it the "A-10 Warthog" of the Post Bug War era. However, the name only works with the pilots, as the current model of the TAC is the "Thunderbolt V".
These fighters were also featured quite heavily in FedNet propaganda during both the First and Second Bug Wars, possibly to encourage excitement and support for the wars.
--F-77 Firefox--
The F-77 Firefox is the standard Tactical Aerospace Fighter used by both the Terran Federation Space Force and Terran Federation Army throughout the Bug Wars era. They are capable of atmospheric superiority as well as space superiority roles. Functionality wise, the design served as a middleground between the Thunderbolt TAC fighter and the A-61 Mantis multirole gunship.
Initially used by the Fleet, they were later relegated to the Army to grant the Mobile Infantry access to hard-hitting strike fighters without the need to rely on close air support from the Fleet. The Firefox is much slower than its Thunderbolt brethren but can withstand a higher degree of punishment. In short, it's a flying tank with the agility of a lightweight interceptor. Pilots are drawn from the veteran vehicle drivers and Marauder pilots, who were then taught the basics of Aerospace Combat Tactics.
Primarily armed with Oxygen nuclear guided bombs and medium air-to-air missiles, the types were often used throughout the two Bug Wars as another Tactical Aerospace Control strike fighter serving alongside its heavier the F-76 Thunderbolt brethren as Hopper Bug deterrent units and dedicated anti-shipping strikecrafts against heavier Transport Bugs.
--F-78 Firecrest--
The F-78 Firecrest is a Terran attack aircraft developed during the Colonization Era and the Hesperusian Colonial Wars based on the T-9 advanced trainer spaceplane frame. Being derived from a highly maneuverable trainer, the F-78 inherits many of the former’s flying characteristics, while placing greater emphasis on ground attack capabilities, thanks to its larger payload. Early models of the aircraft incorporated an internal bomb bay for carrying smaller smart bombs and micro missile launchers. However, later models ditched the bomb bay in favor of mounting pylons. Despite being rather antiquated, the type is still in service with the Federation Army as interceptors and short-ranged attackers well into the late 23rd century (Terran AD Calendar) throughout the Bugs Wars. Apart from the Terran Federation, the type are still in service with the Terran Republic, Systems Alliance and several outer fringe mercenary and pirate groups who lacked access to more high-end military equipments.
