Description
overview of all the F-79 Sigrdiffa variants I have made so far. In this Alt timeline, the F-79 Sigrdriffa replaced the F-76 TAC Thunderbolt as the mainstay strike fighters of the Terran Federation and its allies.--F-79 Sigrdrifa High Speed Interceptor/Strike Fighter--
The first fighter designed for the Universal Fighter Craft program, the F-79 is the first space fighter in the Federation Fleet capable of FTL cruise (albeit its a short ranged one). Although it was designed as an interceptor, the type also is successful as an air superiority fighter. Despite its old-fashioned design, the F-79 impressive performance in high climb rate, maneuverability, making it a formidable adversary to the better armored Batarian fighters.
The Sigrdrifa is often regarded as a much more rugged combat aircraft than the Trident, combined with its docile flight characteristics compared to the high-powered Trident proved to be its major advantage as the Sigdrifa is the most modern fighter available for the Fleet at the closing stage of 1st Batarian War while the latter were delayed in service due to engine problem.
Due to its simple control, ruggedness and weapons, the type also widely exported for foreign nations, with domesitcally produced variants seen in service with less developed nations such as the Terran Republic’s F-79E Rota and the Systems Alliance’s SX-3 Finback point defense intercetor. However, in its early forms, the F-79 short operation range and low payloads limited its effectiveness as a fighter-bomber.
--F-79E Rota--
An enhanced variant of the Sigdriffa for interceptor role, the craft lacked FTL drives present on the baseline and the strike fighter models. The Rota boasts exceptional maneuverability and mobility for the role it was meant for at the cost of its own payload and endurance. Due to the reduced ordnance payload, the model was less effective against larger warships and was primarily used for screening and air defense for the fleet against enemy strike crafts. Despite the improved performance over the baseline models, the F-79E had several flaws, lacking an FTL drive means its operational range was lacking, required the need of a carrier mothership to transport the types to the combat area and launch through launch-tubes or recessed ventral hangar bays.
--F-79J Improved Sigrdrifa/Sigrdrifa Kai--
The F-79J is an improved variant of the original F-79 Sigrdrifa starfighter, featured a heavier engine and a strengthened airframe. Although at first glance the J model appears very similar to the first production variant, there are a number of major visual and performance differences between the two aircrafts. The J model was redesigned for long range operations, instead of the usual short ranged interceptor design of the first production model. The new Type 35 Suisei Thermonuclear Turbines delivered a higher thrust, required the modification of the F-79J fuselage to be slightly wider than on the previous types.
The most obvious noticeable difference is that the F-79J shared the same fuselage section with the F-79E Rota interceptor model. The engine combined with the redesigned fuselage provided much better acceleration but worse maneuverability. While its superior to previous models in terms of endurance and energy fighting performance, the type is still inferior to the more modern F-81 Trident and F-83 Super Starfox, however due to delays in F-81 Trident production and the need to improve the short ranged F-79 early production models, the F-79J become the primary starfighter of the Federation throughout the Batarian conflicts, with delivery starting in 2671 to the Terran Federation Space Fleet Aerospace Force, a total of 3,320 units have been manufactured.
--F-79G Sigrdriffa Plus--
An enlarged variant of the original F-79/SX-3 Sigrdrifa interceptor design, the F-79G is the Terran's mainstay variable swept-wing strike fighters of the fleet. Since the technical issues with the F-81 Trident program delayed their productions and the F-79 being the first prototype of the new Universal Fighter Craft progam to be fit for service, the Sigrdrifa eventually become the replacement craft for the aging F-76 Thunderbolt. First flew in 2662, the F-79 had become the most modern mainstay fleet fighter availalbe in large number of the Terran Federation Navy at the time of the opening hostility with the Batarians.
Since the original F-79 lacked the heavier payload and range for better ground attack capabilities and the refitted TAC fighter lines falls into obsolescence, a more modern strike fighter design was desired, the F-79G was made to be able to perform the interdiction and deep penetration tasks alongside the heavier F-80 Aegis flying wing attackers.
Although larger than the baseline F-79, the G model gained significant improvements over its predecessors such as enhanced defensive capabilities, more efficient high-output engines updated avionics with A.I assisted control systems make the fighter an ease to fly, even for average pilots who transitioned from the Thunderbolt(1) and Firefox(2) types to the Sigrdrifa would have no problem in re-adjustment. This combined with the varied payload options and the higher degree of adaptability and low-operational cost of the baseline Sigrdrifa airframe make the type a versatile fighter-bomber, surpassing even the previous TAC designs of the Firefox and Thunderbolt lineages.
--F-79H Sigrun (also known as SX-3 Finback in Alliance's number designation--
Export variant of the Terran's F-79G fighter-bomber. The F-79H Sigrun is a downsized model of the F-79G with enhanced maneuverability and longer airframe service life. By adopting reliable FTL drives, vehicle's grade kinetic barrier generator and modern avionics on an already robust airframe, the F-79H met the criteria of a docile, beginner-friendly fighter-bomber with superior performance compared to the older F-76 Thunderbolt. Since the F-79G was too large for most warships to operate, the new F-79 variant featured the downsized wings of the F-79G, while also combined the late-production Sigrdriffa frames used on the Rota and Sigrdriffa Kai model, making it more versatile and cost-effective in the long-run.
At the time of the Batarian War, the F-79H reliable performance was highly appreciated by the Alliance's Navy. since it was based on a highly-dependable and proven airframe. However, even with the Alliance's own factory production airframes, they could not sufficiently counter the Batarian fleet due to a lack of well-trained pilots and high combat loss rates. As a result, the Alliance Navy starts to become more dependent on the Federation's military supports as well as other paramilitary organizations while also concentrating their resources in rebuilding their Fleet after the early disastrous confrontations with the Batarian's mainstay military.
