Description

The General Dynamics F-403 is a single-engine aerospace multirole fighter originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as a near-planetary space- and intra-atmosphere fighter, it evolved into a successful aerospace multirole craft, capable of carrier-based operations even in deep space. While the United States remains the primary operator of the F-403, several modified variants are being built for export customers.
Design and Role
The F-403s key features include a frameless bubble canopy for better visibility, improved control interfaces, an emergency ejection system with extra radiation shielding and life support and a new generation of inertial dampeners allowing for more agile maneuvers. The craft features eleven locations for mounting weapons and mission equipment and has an internal Vulcan cannon. A smaller and lighter frame paired with an optimized powerplant and internal systems makes the F-403 a highly maneuverable multirole tactical fighter. The F-403 was designed to be relatively inexpensive to build and simpler to maintain than its predecessors.
In addition to active duty in the U.S. Air Force, United States Navy, Reserve Command, and Air National Guard Units, the craft is also used by the USAF aerospatial demonstration team and Democratic Federal Forces. Having been exported to numerous national forces both within and outside the Democratic Federation, the F-403 has been established as one of the most numerous multirole fighters in active service.
Variants
The F-403 has been developed into a wide range of variants designated according to their production blocks. The following is a list of the most prominent variants, but not exhaustive.

F-403A/B
The F-403A (single sea) and F-403B (two seats) were initial production variants including Blocks 1,5,10 and 20. Block 20 introduced the first major update of electronics and stabilizers.

F-403C
The F-403C variants introduced improved cockpit avionics, interfaces, and sensor systems adding deep-space capabilities, accommodating modified missile systems.

F-403N
The F-403 Navy variant was optimized for carrier-based operations with several modifications to the propulsion system, thrusters, and on-board electronics. An export variant with stripped-down systems was purchased by the Royal Navy and introduced as part of the complement for several deep-space task groups.

QF-403EX
The QF experimental variant was used by the U.S. Airforce to test the remote operation of fighters in several maneuvers exercises. The results and scope of the project have not been disclosed.

Development History
The contract for the development and production of a new tactical multirole fighter was given out by the United States in the 2260s and produced a number of designs with varying success. The F-403 stood out in the relative simplicity of its design and small size, as well as a projected development cost far below that of other candidates. It was eventually chosen for a full production program and the first prototypes were finished within the decade. F-403 entered active service in the U.S. Airforce by the 2270s and a navy variant followed mere four years later.
