Totally agree, it's more than just a hardcore nostalgia trip. The color palette and world design is something else. And the fact the creator worked his heart condition and illness into the design of his game made it that much more powerful. Darn it, now instead of art when I get home I think I'll go play some more Hyper Light Drifter.
