Hey there! I`ll get straight to it cause I`m sure your a busy artist! I`m not sure if you`ll remember back to this but if you still use the same kind of technique, I was wondering in your transition from pictures 3 --> 4. How you began with Umm I guess contouring or starting with the rough colouring. To blend and smooth it out, did you just use an airbrush? I only ask because I`m pretty new to it all but you make it look so effortless. Any advice would be so much appreciated Β

(Big fan of your work, but who isn`t)

Hi,
I actually used COREL PAINTER 11 to paint this and used their smugde/blend tool for step 3-4.
Although I probably recommend not ever blending, smudging and blur any paint because the effect will always be muddy, no matter what the program.Β
My advice for smooth transitioning gradient of skin is by decreasing the 'opacity' of your paint to about 30% - 40%.
Then gradually build up the skin.
Used solid brush first to block out the major colours.
Then use the airbrush to smooth out skin.Β
Use your 'eyedropper tool' to manually select transitioning colour on the skin between the dark part and the light parts. If you gradually keep selecting the colour and applying it bit by bit, it blends everything together without being muddy and diluted. Never use the smudge or blend tool.

Thank you for dropping by

Thank you so much! I will put your advice to work straight away! That was my exact problem, the skin blending was become so muddy. So I will certainly try your method with the opacity and solid brush then soft to smooth everything out. If I could just trouble you a little more, when you are blending the skin shadows and tones and everything, should I use a very small brush and build up the skin carefully, I just ask because I seem to be losing so much colour when I blend.Β

Anyway thank you so much! I`m going to strive and hopefully one day I can`t paint up to the amazing standard you have set

The brush size should change depending on what part you're rendering. You'll have to try using your judgement skills while painting, Trial and Error my friend. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Perhaps hunt down some online tutorials on skin and colour rendering. I learned quite a bit from observation.Β

What brushes did you use in painter?

I wish I could get the blender tool to work for me this way. lol.

haha, the reference was a big help ^_^
As for bruhes, i just used the normal airbrush and the blender was on real low opacity.

Eightly In reply to LAS-T [2010-07-20 11:04:44 +0000 UTC]

I dont know why but I cant get the blender to behave for me. Ive heard how its like this "miracle" brush but anytime I try it ends up a muddy mess.
