ART PRINTS AVAILABLE: natlamina.art/

In Philippine mythology, Mayari was the daughter of Bathala to a mortal woman. Mayari is the Goddess of the Moon, as well as War, Hunt and Beauty. She lost her one eye after losing a war against Apolaki (God of the Sun), and this painting is that exact moment. Apolaki apologized to Mayari and relented to Mayari's proposal to rule each half of the day. Since then, Apolaki ruled the earth during the day, while Mayari ruled the world every night. However, her light shines dimmer because of her lost eye.

The shadow on her left is Apolaki's. In this moment when he is a threat to her, represents also the viewer's shadow as you would stand right in front of her. She represents the myth and culture and you represents the generation who threatens the past.
