First sight, wow a masterpiece.
A more detailed look, and can't help it but my eyes go straight to the panties and those carefuly drawn curves of ... ahem, well I gotta stop here.
Showing off so much doesn't lower your skill level, but it will overshadow your original idea by making people concentrate at.. well, panties. (Unless your purpose is to draw attention by adding some naughtiness)
Personally I still think this is a masterpiece and deseved the DD.
But a suggestion. I really feel bad how artists nowdays sexualize the image of a little girl which is not even an adult. Let your technique and message behind the artwork speak louder than panties and breasts of a little yet to grow girl.
Don't get me wrong here lol. My purpose is not to be mean to you. Just a casual advice I'd give. I love your technique, but... those panties lol. I can't see this image properly when you as an artist bring them out. I mean come on dude.. atlleast would be so much better if instead of a little girl you painted a sexy fully grown woman. THAT I'd call appropriate.
Still a masterpiece though

But since you are very sincere.
So I want you to know something...

This Taiwanese girl named Candy
Her 20 years old
img.adulu.com/4/suyanzhao/2011…
matchbin-assets.s3.amazonaws.c…
This Taiwanese lady called Huanhuan
Her 42 years old
This shows one thing "Asian female aging more slowly"
just like...My girlfriend is 31 years old.
Height 150 cm, weight 40 kg, C cup
I guess when you see her, you would think she's just high school student
(even primary student)
I think the most lovely age is 16 ~ 30
But Western's 16 ~ 30 year old woman, Maybe I'll feel they are 22 ~ 40 years
Maybe it's just a "Cultural difference"

Hi! First of all, your painting and shading techniques here are pretty beautiful. There's a really great sense of lighting and detail, and I like the smooth yet somewhat textured brush strokes you use. The girl's face and hat are beautifully stylized, and I really like the anatomy of the cat. I like the colors you selected, but the background is looking a little patchy in places (The forest to the mid left is the strongest example of this. It's so close to the focal point, ut doesn't look as well thought out as some other elements in the piece) Now all this said, her anatomy has some strong mistakes. First of all, I understand you're going for a sexy pin up style piece. That said, make sure you're focusing more on what you're trying to tell with the pin up rather than "I like crotch. I like boobs. I like ass. I like face" and then trying to cram all of them in at the same time. Yes this is done to death in comic books, so it's not like you're single handedly ruining the depiction of women, but what you aren't doing is improving your artwork. PUSH your anatomy, yes, but make sure that the woman (or figure) doesn't look broken when you do so. The cat here, for instance, is at a weird angle, but is accomplished beautifully, which tells me that you CAN accomplish very nice anatomy
www.cartoonbrew.com/wp-content… cdn.buzznet.com/assets/users16… 1.bp.blogspot.com/_M3XwnOATEW4…
Here's some pin ups by Chris Sanders. He stylizes the woman's body, and pushes anatomy and yet it doesn't feel unrealistic. This is because despite pushing everything, he's a master at anatomy. Also, the women are still beautiful and sexy without having to show off every single asset at the same time.
And I mean, even if you really WANT to show off every single asset of a woman off at the same time, then just add more women to your piece rather than break one woman in every way. People are less offended by a panty shot than they are that it looks like objectification when you break a woman to show her off.
Anyway, cutting this short. If you'd ever like a red line or a more in depth critique, I can note you with further details.

(don't worry, it's not the panties that I care about) the perspective of the girl seems slightly off to me. Her body seems to be too twisted. And the horizon line of the sky in comparison with the foreground seems a bit compressed together.
...
but with that said, the anatomy of the witch is pretty good, and the design of her outfit is very pretty. It reminds me of a lot of old-school magical girl shows. I love the colors of the piece altogether, especially the contrasting colors of the sky. I give it a 4/5 ^_^ (never done a mini-critique before, so... yeah, I thought I'd keep it balanced. Hope I didn't screw it up)

Lulumewtrainer , It looks off because that twist would break her spine and she would be paralyzed.
It's a very common mistake artists make when they try draw that perspective.
lascalis , simple mistake like that discredits all of the hard work you put into the piece.
Sorry... I can't say I like it.

It's not the panties, it's the twisted spine thing *ouch*. She looks like her back is dislocated. Would have been a nice picture without that.

When was art ever about being correct in proportions or making colors match their real life counterparts, etc? Art is about creating something that people appreciate, pulling from your mind a new idea to show other people. Its not exact, it looks kind of strange I suppose.. although I'm horrible with perspective and bodies. And what about artists like Picasso who painted a whole slew of artworks that were never proportional but because of the thoughts and ideas put into it, his art became famous?
I don't mean to go on an entire spiel about it. It's just not fair to say this isn't a great piece of art because of something like that, and that because of it, it doesn't deserve DD. And the panties comment was more directed at the first page of comments to the girl who can't properly reply to anyone. ^^''

*Nods* I get what you're saying however I don't think you can compare picasso to this. This is meant to be in proportion, the spine has been dislocated to show a gratuitous bust and panties shot which to be honest annoys more than only me. How often do you see men posed like this? If it was more abstract fine, but this is something that people do when drawing girls to get the B&B sticking out of the picture even if anatomically impossible. I refer you to the escher girls website for more info.
To be honest I probably wouldn't have even commented but the DD is for the "great angles". *Shrugs* each to his own I guess

annariette In reply to jacij [2013-07-29 19:01:18 +0000 UTC]
You're right. Picasso was a bad example because he was purposely doing that and his art was an entirely different style. And the back has been twisted for the reasons you state. And no, a man wouldn't be posed like this, they don't have these assets to show off. It shouldn't be wrong to show off the form of a female. Yet, I understand that in this case, if they had really wanted to show her off, they could have easily just angled her body differently on the broom to get somewhat of the same pose. And you can't say this isn't a great angle, and that if all they had done is situate her differently on the broom it wouldn't be a problem. The DA community has ignored many great artists. DD should, yes, be for the great angles, and exceptional ideas and compositions, but it also shouldn't be taken too seriously. We shouldn't stamp upon a piece of art that has gotten DD because it isn't done properly in our eyes. DD isn't some grand prize. To me I see a lot of art go into DD that looks like everything else I see on DA and just overall not a very good composition. But someone thought it was good and many other people who have put it in their favorites must of thought it was good, and thus my opinion will continue to be my own.

Hi, drive by comment, but it's a bad idea to ever try and act like mistakes in anatomy don't matter because famous people who purposely bent rules did so. In artwork you should always push anatomy, but there comes a point where it breaks and it looks like a mistake rather than a purposeful adjustment.
The painting style and color here is beautiful, but the anatomy REALLY bothers me because it's trying to go for a style rather than really understanding what it's doing. (basically, it goes "these are the elements of a woman I like, so I will capture all at the same time despite it looking weird and wrong in the end") Pin up art is beautiful, but it doesn't need to break the woman to be so

Anatomy does matter. Yes. I didn't mean to say it doesn't. But I looked at this picture and didn't even think twice about how her back is twisted. Maybe this is because my level of artistic skill isn't anywhere close and also why I don't so harshly push it aside as being not that great because of it's poor anatomy. I looked at this and saw all the MMO's floating around the internet and how it looked like it could be from one of those. I do understand what you're saying though, and that the back has been twisted to show off her assets and because of that the anatomy is wrong. And if the artist had angled her a little differently it wouldn't be a problem. I'd hope this is something they'd learn from. I just don't think it should be stamped upon and said it's not worthy of DD (when someone obviously thought it was good).

I don't think people should ever run around saying "Your art clearly doesn't deserve a DD rawr!" since it's all opinion anyway.
I always go by "if something bothers you about the piece, crit it kindly and then walk away" which I did.
And yeah, one reason you may not have immediately seen the incorrect anatomy is because the Boob and Butt pose, which this is, has sort of become commonplace in artworks, especially in comic books to the point that often times people don't even realize that they ARE breaking the anatomy, as they're just trying to re-create something they've seen a million times. It bothers me, personally, because it is a pose that feels more objectifying than flattering. Pin up art can be both sexy and very flattering to the women (even if unrealistic) while still adhering to anatomy.
