Description       The Traveler flew majestically at low altitude, feeling the wind through his clothes. It was now easy to see why he wore so much.
His arms were swept back, and his legs at a slight part, for optimal thrust. The jets on his boots were flaming blue.
On the horizon, a range of small mountains was visible. That seemed to be his destination.
The sun was at his back, he was traveling west. Though the mountains were just visible, they were approaching rapidly. The Traveler's mode of transport was efficient, he seemed to have fine control of flight.
He reached the mountains on the other side of the basin in about an hour. Though the Traveler probably knew this, the distance he had covered was approximately one hundred and eighty miles.
He touched down between two crags of rock, and the pyres on his feet went out. The only light came from the fledgling sun, the shadows were deep and long. He walked between a few outcrops of tone, weaving his way through a small pocket in the mountain. He ended up at a large hole; the entrance to a cave system. The cavern was very wide, and very dark.
He reached down to his belt and drew one of his revolvers. He twirled it around his index finger expertly, then pulled the trigger, not aiming anywhere in particular.
A shower of white sparks leaped from the end of the barrel, then a crackling pole of flame sprouted. It grew to about four feet, then stopped. The flame was white, with a blue core, it resembled a blowtorch that had been given too much fuel.
The light was bright, and it broke a small part of the darkness in front of the Traveler.
He stepped forward with his torch, and entered the abyss.

The Traveler was deep inside the cavern network, sharp stalactites grew threateningly from the ceiling, and his torch didn't give off adequate light, it seemed. He was weaving through a narrow corridor, and turned a corner.
He stepped into a huge open area, large to the point that the walls and ceiling were not visible in the light of the torch. It was silent, beside the occasional drip of water from somewhere above.
An ordinary person's footsteps would echo wildly in the cavern, especially in steel boots, but the Traveler's tread made no sound.
Just then, something snorted. This was not the snort of a dog, or a horse. Something... bigger.
The Traveler turned around- very slowly.
The light in his hands illuminated the sight behind him, and it was indeed much larger than a dog.
It could best be described in relative terms as a sort of titanic lobster, with augmentations to the body structure. There were huge mandibles in the front that dripped venom. The weak back legs of a lobster were replaced with stout, redwood sized limbs. The claws had grown wildly out of proportion, it was a wonder how the creature could keep them held aloft. It was about as long as two school buses, and its hide made bullets look like a minor annoyance.
It reared up on its back limbs, let out a bone-powdering screech, and hefted a mighty claw, ready to mash the Traveler to bits.
It brought the claw down with incredible force, and the Traveler, unfazed, held up his torch and intercepted it.  He accepted the full brunt of the blow on his fiery blade, which seemed to be more solid than steel.  Shockwaves of force and displaced air rippled out from him, and broke the ground in a wide radius.
He shoved the enormous claw aside effortlessly, like brushing away a fly. It made a crater as it impacted the ground.
He back flipped into the air as the beast brought down the other claw, and landed on top of the first. He ran down the monster's arm and stopped on its back.
He plunged his blade directly into the creature's back.
It screamed in agony, and thrashed about, trying to dislodge the Traveler, but to no avail. The Traveler ran toward the beast's head, dragging the blade through its armored hide like it was tissue paper. He halted at the base of its neck, then jumped high toward the ceiling in a mighty bound. Gravity took hold of him after thirty feet, and he fell to earth feet first. He spun around, once, twice, then at the moment of impact with the monster's head he released his jet's afterburners- full thrust.
The creature's head was instantly engulfed in flames and was thrown into the ground with incredible force. It separated from the body and shattered to pieces.
The beast's body keeled over and crashed on its side. A few of the massive limbs twitched, then it was still.
The charred, blackened debris of the beast's head let off an unpleasant smell. There were two sparkling objects in the middle of the detritus- the beast's eyes. They were somehow spared by the heat and now resembled grapefruit-sized black diamonds. The Traveler placed both into a pouch on one of his belts. They were surprisingly dense and solid.
He turned around and ignited his jets, and blasted out of the cavern at top speed, dodging stalagmites with startling agility.

This is cool. Don't give him a "mysterious past" though, as it seems it might fit this character. It's really cliched. Can I do your book covers?
