Description This tutorial shows how perspective distortion can be removed from a photograph of an artwork prior to its submission to DeviantArt using the free photo-editing program GIMP 2.8.14.  Other photo-editing programs are likely to offer similar facilities for this correction.

This is one of a series of tutorials that I have submitted.  Here are the others:
                            Minimising Graphite Shine
                            Barrel Distortion Correction
                            Histogram Adjustment

These tutorials update my earlier  Tutorial in which I used a less versatile free photo-editing program and mentioned GIMP only in an update in the description below the tutorial.  I hope that these new ones will clarify the methods that I use.

Thanks a lot for this interesting tutorial Digitalizing drawings has always been a nightmare for me, and I never thought of using perspective tool (I have PS, I should give it a try) for distortion corrections.

I had seen a tutorial on the use of a photo-editing program to straighten buildings but realised that it was no good for photos of drawings unless it could be stretched accurately to the correct aspect ratio.  I suddenly hit upon the idea of setting the crop ratio to the size of the paper and using this for the adjustment.  I find that however carefully I set up for the photograph there is almost invariably some perspective distortion that needs adjustment.

That's right, and I understand why I am dismayed when I take a drawing picture, to see the altered proportions. I know how to solve it from now on!

The reason that I have been producing these tutorials recently is that I experienced, as I so very often do, difficulty in starting a new drawing.  I was very pleased with how my last drawing had turned out and once again feared that I could never reproduce the same quality in another drawing! So I decided to start on these tutorials, which had been on my list of things to do for some time (I see so many photos of drawings on dA that would benefit from a few minutes preparation before submission) but I had just not got round to making them.  Of course now that I have started on them I have also been able to start the next drawing too, so now the two projects are competing for my time!
