I'm still working on my project. Do you have any advice? Apparently I was supposed to finish both of the sides and I thought she would just ignore my only semi-completion of the second side (due to the major suckage), but I have to complete that AND the begging of the new portrait project. BWAGARG! I'm never going to be absent again.

Ohh, we're doing the same thing in our art classes. Except right now, I'm working on a teapot 8D Like one of those old fashioned ones on a stove.

The grass WAS kind of dark, but that's understandable, seeing how coloring things like that is a BITCH. The car looked so realistic! I saw it in my inbox and I'm like, 'Oh, SHIT that's fucking awesome.'

I really enjoy tonal work, I hope you can continue with the medium! You seem to have a good handle on it.

Your tire and hubcap look good especially considering that it's a mechanical object rendered using a "chatoic" medium like smudged graphite. I've found with my tonal work that the object is to control the movement of a medium that essntially wants to go where ever it wants to. It can be tricky that way.

On your car you left your highlights and created a smooth flowing metallic texture, that looks very convincing. The cool thing about smudge and smeary stuff is that you can create elaborate textures and blend them into each other giving it a more subtle look. This would have worked great I think in creating a slight texture to the asphalt at the bottom of the pic. The top half seems to have all your love, as well it should it's the only object. Still I think a little street texture would have made your piece a bit more interesting.

The Picnic with a frog is a much more complete looking pic, in that it has something interesting going on in both halves. basically you don't have as much "dead space". It dose run a bit dark but, that doesn't bother me that much.

Your awesome handling of texture is obvious hear as well. I can clearly see the blanket is different from the grass, even though they are the same basic shade.

Your grass (yeah, grass is tough, anything with a lot of little bits is tough) is just a bit muddy. Virgin-ronin said it right "When using any medium, try working from light to dark. It's easy to add more dark value on top of the light." This is espeacialy true for complicated interweaving texture like grass. It's best I find, to start out with very light lines creating the simple shapes of each blade then find interesting drop shadows and shapes and render those with a harder darker stroke.

These are very succsessful pieces! I'm looking forward to seeing more of this in the future!

hmmhmm critique wise.. it looks like you use that smudgey shading style. personally i dont like that style, i think defining the shades looks much better than smudging the shading. umm but yeah idk thats just me n_n;; i mean, its ok to smudge things on some parts of the picture (for example youve made the road look really nice) but not for the whole thing..
also, the grass is a bit too dark and lacks definition. but i understand how that happened because last year i had to draw a shaded picture with heaps of grass and it was really fucking hard hahah

anyway, congrats! and this looks super nice c:

YAY Latsy!!! This picture is so potent.... it just got me pregnant! You champion the underdogs of art; stick it to those studio/AP students!

Left picture: You nailed that car, spot on! The shading underneath the car and the different angles of the rim were really well done. You established a light source (coming from the top-right corner) and all the shades coincided with it.

Right picture: nicely done tray of food (mmm hambuger! ) Every item on it is lit and shaded well. The problem I noticed is you seemed to press too hard when coloring the grass. When using any medium, try working from light to dark. It's easy to add more dark value on top of the light, but tough to erase/fix something that's really dark, and also harder to recognize forms & shapes.

You should be proud of yourself, and I'll be proud to have your babies
