Description A New York Post cartoon that some have interpreted as comparing President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police has drawn outrage from civil rights leaders. The cartoon caption reads: “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.” The cartoon refers to a chimpanzee who was killed on Monday by police in Connecticut after it mauled a friend of its owner.

Some critics called the cartoon racist and others said it suggests that Obama should be assassinated. “To compare the nation’s first African-American commander in chief to a dead chimpanzee is nothing short of racist drivel,” said Barbara Ciara, president of the US National Association of Black Journalists.

Actually Mr.Obama was not compared to a chimp.

Mr.Obama did not write the stimulus bill.

I am not a fan of President Bush. But why is OK to compare a white man to a monkey?

I'll tell you what's racist; a black man finally gets to the office of the Presidency, and we have to turn the slightest resemblance of racism into a nation-wide panic attack. Or, since our brothers in sisters abroad have acquired a special taste for bashing America ("AmeriKKKa" as one reader so fondly put it), a world-wide politically correct circle-jerk.

I am a Black American. I voted for Barack Hussein the FUCK OBAMA, because I like his politics, and I thought it was a nice chance to show that America's getting smarter, and it's getting better. And I can't turn my head one way or the other without seeing the race card flying out of every dumb, dribbling pundit's lips, and every foreign or domestic far-left college student's finding his or her way to deviantArt and Myspace and the internet at large to tell us all how racist America must be.

We just elected the man. Doesn't that prove a god damn thing? Now, we're sticking up for something that I'm sure he doesn't even find racist. He didn't write the goddamn stimulus bill, a bunch senators and representatives did. He didn't get compared to a chimp, they did. And when all's said and done with the National Association of Black Journalists, and the NAACP, I want to know why we, Black Americans, as a race, have to be listed collectively with a bunch of dumb, over-sensitive niggers by the entire world, because I sure as hell didn't ask for it. AmeriKKKA, my black ass.

I read the cartoon and had a good laugh, but never thought about any racial undertones 'till others brought it up. Keep in mind Obama didn't write it in the first place - his minions in Congress did.

The more obvious interpretation is that the Spending Bill was the most disgusting wasteful spending Congress has ever passed. It's unlikely any one of them have read the entire 1100 pages of spending yet The point is that the chimp they shot was as stupid and reckless as the fools on the hill. Careful where you tread; vindicating the newspaper & artist is just one more step toward silencing free speech.

The cartoon is not racist. It is comparing the chimp to Congress, not Obama.
It is merely saying that the lawmakers on the Hill have gone wild on spending with this "stimulus bill"(if you could even call it that), and that someone has to stop them.

Personally, I thought it was a brilliant piece of satire and was very clever.

I have seen plenty of pictures comparing Bush to a chimp. The question becomes did the New York Post pick on Bush in a similar way. If they did, I do not believe the criticism is justified. Yet if they did not, then yes it is warranted.

I mean, the amjority of americans thought that cartoon was racist, another maority rather hate the policies that get half the world to hate us, yet... people think that the average joe fuck-o had a hand in, say, using racist commentary about Obama or going to war in iraq. I mean, Im a american, but... I dont agree with ANYTHING that Bush did, but when i go to canada, suddenly IM respnsible or some shit. it really gets frustrating.

that's true man, everybody agreed when they compared bush to a chimp, so why can't they do it with the new guy?

i feel most of the people see him as the black guy, why don't you see him as just a guy. we are all humans, and each of us is an individual, i mean that we are what we do, not what we look like.

this is for you to ponder mr. latuff.

abrazo,

I agree with the point of why was it okay to portray Bush as a primate?

Seems a huge double standard. We're seeing a lot more of this lately. And this isn't new!

Okay to make fun of republicans and anything you say is inbounds, but the democrats seem to not think so when it's about them. Not fair, not right.

You have to remember the history. Black people were once called "monkeys" in a racist connotation. I believe that the racism of the 60s and further back has subsided. The original cartoon in question looms perilously close to, if it doesn't go into, blatant racial overtones.

I don't believe Obama is above criticism, however.

And I am a Black conservative.

hellion In reply to tyendor [2009-02-25 03:04:37 +0000 UTC]

I remember the history, and I can easily see how someone could be offended by it. However the cartoonist has a right to say it, the paper the right to publish it, and you have the right to judge him as you see fit. You as an individual also have the right to respond as you see fit. On one end I think the paper needs to protect its business, yet, I fear that political correctness and trying to never offend hurts us all. Especially when out of fear of reprisal by media, interest groups, terrorist groups (thinking towards the Mohammad cartoons), etc. I think it inspires groupthink because quickly any contrary view is deemed as hostile or ignorant.

I think my example of things fired at Clarence Thomas especially around the time of his confirmation hearings in comparison to what is not allowed to be said about Barak Obama applies very well. Some of the cartoons about Condoleeza Rice in the last 10 years have been very hate filled using racial overtones and stereotypes, but they never get called out like this. Even Family Guy did it. Very, very different standard is applied based on the target.

It's not the democrats, If you had made this comparrison with any of the Clintons, not a single soul would have cared.

Probaly Obama himself doesn't care, but some way too outspoken people care "for him".

It's the old "freedom of speach" issue. When you you draw the line from "verbal abuse" to "free speach"? I doubt there's such a thing, people just like things black and white.

If people had just ignored the drawing, it would be pretty harmless, just like the Mohammed drawings; it's just drawings, nothing else people! It's the people, the paranoid and hatefull, that make it an issue, and split people appart. The ideas live in the beholder, not the visuals.

Some people see the virgin Mary on a grilled cheese sandwich... heh

I think as far as the Clintons go, and to a lesser degree Al Gore, they don't belong to one of the "protected classes". And in some ways are the left's decoys to draw fire for things. Nansi Pelosi and Harry Reid have started to take on this mantle as well, but not as many people know who they are. I'm just thinking of some of the venomous things that have been said about Micheal Steel, Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, Clarence Thomas (just to name a few), where if they were part of the other ideology there would have been massive backlash. Though I do wonder what would happen if the New York Times were to publish a cartoon tomorrow with Clarence Thomas represented as a gorilla in the Justice's robes on the bench. I'm not quite sure how that would play out.

Maybe it's not the political parties themselves, and instead the people that run the news outlets and companies that render popular culture.
Either way, it seems with more and more regularity a double standard is being applied to an expanding number of situations and outlets. It goes beyond "well I think that's distasteful" and into the realm of trying to destroy people over it. The first is totally okay, second no.
