Description
I diddled and I doodled and I quickly colored pretty much directly over my sketch... and uh.... drew my first dragon EVAR O___O like, evar, evar. But lolololol for some reason deep down inside in my heart, I don't really classify Toothless as a dragon. He's more of a flying salamander cat... with bat wings. Ahhh I wish you guys, ANY of you guys, knew what I was talking about. I'm still buzzed over seeing that fantastic film... and now I have to wait a month for it to actually come out in theaters, lol. But when it comes to IMAX, and it will, I'm gonna be the first one there, rofl.
Rare for me to draw a fan art of non anime. I didn't really spend too much time on it. Frankly, there's not really much reference for me to go on at this point, since I didn't bring my sketch book to the theater with me on Thursday, and the trailers do not NEARLY do the movie justice.
So uhhh yeah... uhhhhh Go see the movie on March 26th : D
P.S. Now that I look at it, Toothless looks kinda like a Navi : D LOL : D And like Stitch : D Thanks to Chris Sanders, who had designed Stitch too lol

The film is nowhere near as good as the books, but still good and this image is perfect in it's representation of these characters.

You may use a portion of my image in a forum banner, and may post my images on a private webpage like imageshack, among a fan art collection of images... but I don't permit other members of DA to submit my images in their gallery, even for IDs. Sorry. But, you may want to try your own stab at drawing an ID for yourself. After all, if you're going to identify yourself, why cant the ID be something by you? Don't pretend to be someone else.

A great and even heartwarming work! You've really captured the 'boy and his dragon' aspect of the film here!

Eeeeee, I know exactly what you mean by "flying-salamander-cat with bat wings"...
When we got back home from seeing the movie, there was a kitten roaming the street that looked just like Toothless! Except it had beautiful amber-honey eyes rather than green. Woulda been awesome if they were green, I would have stolen that kitty and taken it home... Almost did anyway. Many of the dragon movements are VERY feline, so much so that when a preview for Shrek came on just before the movie. I noticed Puss in Boots had almost the same eyes as Toothless the dragon. <3 LOVE this, I am impressed that it is your first time drawing a dragon and that it is a rough sketch because it's very good!

it doesnt look like a dragon because its based on an axolotl, or ajolote, a mexican amphibian (they make really cool pets, even if quite still)
great pic, hiccup looks really cute <3

You know what's funny? I just met with Nicolas Marlet today at a book signing. He's the guy who designed Toothless (and the rest of the characters in How to Train Your Dragon). I actually brought your comment up with him. I asked him if Toothless was perhaps designed with an axolotl in mind, and he looked at me like I was crazy, and he said "What's that? No, I didn't model Toothless off of a Mexican salamander" and he went on saying he was modeled with a panther in mind. He really had no idea what I was talking about. He doesn't know there EXISTS a creature out there who looks like Toothless. I find that incredibly ironically funny XD

The movie originally was based directly on the book. They even built and rigged Toothless to be the small dragon from the book. However, the directors were let go, and another set of directors came and went, and before you knew it, a third set of directors were invited to completely redo the movie, which were Chris Sanders and Dean DuBois, the creators of Lilo and Stitch. They changed the story aroudn entirely to save the omvie, and make it better, because there was no tension in the book, and apparently the worst bad guy, some whale or something (I dont know the story of the book) was wooed by Dragonese. It was incredibly anticlimactic, so they beefed up the story by giving it a complex and dynamic plot, underlything themes, and most of all, they upgraded Toothless to be something that Hiccup must face and overcome. They DID however, keep the original Toothless in the film. The Terrible Terror.... the little baby dragons in the film... That was the original Toothless design before Sanders upgraded him to a stealth bomber : P

well i think the book will be better lol! but the bad guy IS the same in the movie and i saw the coloring book and they did make the dragon that was the villain blow up like it was in the book!but i think it will be a good movie oh yeah and i hate how they made the nerdy kid fishlegs keep the name but they made him the big one named dogsbreath its just strange and they made the mean kid snotlout seem nicer. idk when im gonna see the movie....

You really have to get them to see it. The trailers were not done by Dreamworks but rather by Paramount. Everyone at Dreamworks right now is really upset with the trailers because it totally gives the wrong impression of the film. Paramount is making it seem like it's some kind boy-with-his-dog story, but it's... augh, it's hard to talk about it without spoiling it. It's a beautiful dynamic film with an amazing story, and it's a tear-jerker in parts. It certainly isn't the kiddie film that the trailers advertise it to be. I love it so, so, so much, I'm going to see it a third time!

8 years olds won't understand some of the underlying themes of the movie. I mean yeah, they'll get it on the surface, but there's so many more complex messages, and symbolism, that a college student could write a paper about it for an English class. I don't think you need to be a kid to enjoy this movie. Madagascar, yes. This movie, no. That's like saying you need to be 8 years old to enjoy The Lion King, lol.

This movie is like everything you wished Eragon but wasn't. Like a non-talking minimally anthropomorphized dragon is actually much more of a character, partner, and personality than Saphira ever was (books or film).

Baboe In reply to FablePaint [2010-03-23 11:56:24 +0000 UTC]
Well, I read both books and I think that Saphira in Eragon was more charismatic than Toothless^^ but nevermind.

I was talking about the original artwork not about the film. Because in the most of the films for example Eragon the character behaviour aren't the same as in books. And I said nevermind so nevermind!
