Description So much for not doing "pretty girls" anymore

The thing is, I've realized I like my pictures a lot better when I start sketching them. But then I keep "polishing" the images to give them a more finished look and that's when I screw them up. So I decided to try focusing in only some areas and leave the rest "undone". So far I like the result, it looks more expressive.

So that's it, oil on board, 20X30 cm.

Thanks for taking a look

Very pretty work, I really love the combination of the partially painted against the skecthed outlines, it gives an insight into how you go about building this pieces up.

Thank you I thought about using the word build in the title cause that's what these images are about
But then I changed my mind

It still works well, I'm a big fan of WIPS so it's always interesting to see how you go about creating a piece.

Beautiful!

I agree. Polishing can take the life out of art.
As you say, so much occurs in the rough sketches that is worth keeping. I like this new direction.

I have been taking a similar approach for a while now and not only am I generally happier with the result, I get more joy out of the process.

That's great that you're enjoying working this way too, I think it can be very pleasing for any artist to give it a try

Thanks a lot, like always

You have reach a point with your art where you are ready to let go of expectations and just let things happen. You are clearly ready for this.

Art becomes play when you do this. I like that the work never seems 'contrived' and I also like the chance of creating 'happy mistakes'.

I know exactly what you're talking about. How many times I wish I had stopped. This piece has a certain vibe to it. I can't quite explain it, but I do like it.

laurart In reply to Vynnx [2009-06-18 02:37:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think it happens to a lot of people, we don't know when to stop! And it's like unless you paint everything then it's not finished.
One of my favourite painters is Toulouse Lautrec, I should learn more from him.

Thanks, I'm glad it has some mystery and I'm glad you like that

That's awesome, I love the partially finished look. I think, while maybe not as "pretty" as some of your others, there's a lot more feeling to it. I can't stop staring at that eye.

I sometimes feel the same, like I should have stopped halfway through. It can be very helpful just to walk away.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

laurart In reply to Sindae [2009-06-18 01:25:22 +0000 UTC]

Yes! That's how I feel about it too, sometimes less really is more. And the first traces sometimes are the most raw and beautiful ones.

Thank you
