Description
So this is how I made the dress from the film King Arthur.I am no seamstress I merely made this in a methodical way.
Anyway, with all of that aside I hope this helps or at least sheds some light upon how to make it.
After step 5 please turn inside out to hide the seams, for the sleeves you will see the seams anyway unless you make them separately.
I used around 3 meters of fabric that was 60 inches wide.
The cotton jersey fabric was a soft stretchy type so it draped really well.
I have some new photos of the dress here charter-magic.deviantart.com/aβ¦ and here charter-magic.deviantart.com/aβ¦
EDIT:
As I receive so much interest from this tutorial if I made a short run of these dress would anyone be interested in buying one?

Hi Laura,Β
I have to go to a fancy dress medieval dinner and...
So...I can't sew...but this is straight lines right? The bit I am wondering about is the braiding...any idea where to get some beautiful ribbon / braid in the UK. Β I think it would make the dress for me. Take the attention away form the dodgy stitching.
Thanks
Michelle

Hi Michelle,
(This isn't a medieval dress it's ancient Roman in origin- just so you know.)
If you want a more medieval look then I suggest you curve the pattern - by cutting in more at the waist- and make the belt sit at the waist instead of just under the bust (which is known as a 'Empire line'). You would also need to change the shape of the neck but that would mean a whole new pattern and if you're not confident in your sewing then just stick to what I've suggested.
Yes it's 'straight' lines (well as straight as possible if you don't have a sewing machine!) remember though in the time before sewing machines it would have been hard to get very neat lines so don't worry too much about it.
As for ribbon I would try places like Hobby Craft and Ebay or any fabric craft supply shop.
Good luck with your creation!
Laura

Hey! Thank you so much for posting this tutorial. I'm going to use it, in combination with another not-a-pattern, to make my wedding dress. I've already ordered my fabric (royal blue jersey, for that nice drape!) and it should be here by the end of the week. I can't wait to start working on it! Could you post any further comments on steps you might have left out, or things you wish you'd done? How deep of a collar did you cut? IIRC, in the movie, Keira's dress kept slipping over her shoulder tooβ¦

LauraTolton In reply to isisingonthecake [2013-04-08 22:56:36 +0000 UTC]
Hello, well I would suggest using a interfacing for the neck area just to stop it from moving/stretching so much, and cut a neck smaller than you think it looks because the weight of the sleeves will pull it off your shoulders.
You should make a mock up dress first in a similar jersey just so you can see how it works, I would hate for your wedding dress to not be perfect for you.
there are close up shots and some details about the dress here [link]
one lady on the site had the same idea as me to cut it all from a square/rectangle.
best of luck, I'm happy to help if you have further questions. x

I have it in the description.
But I suggest using 3 meters just in case you need to make it bigger or smaller etc. I used cotton jersey which was very stretchy (I chose it for colour and budget) but I would suggest if you have a better budget than I did then go for a textured (woven) soft cotton fabric.
you can see better images of the dress from the film here to give you an idea what to look for;
