Description So this is how I made the dress from the film King Arthur.
I am no seamstress I merely made this in a methodical way.

Anyway, with all of that aside I hope this helps or at least sheds some light upon how to make it.

After step 5 please turn inside out to hide the seams, for the sleeves you will see the seams anyway unless you make them separately.

I used around 3 meters of fabric that was 60 inches wide.
The cotton jersey fabric was a soft stretchy type so it draped really well.

I have some new photos of the dress here charter-magic.deviantart.com/a… and here charter-magic.deviantart.com/a…

EDIT:

As I receive so much interest from this tutorial if I made a short run of these dress would anyone be interested in buying one?

Thank you so much for sharing this! I made a dress from this pattern (with little alterations) using linen fabric to wear at Middle-earth themed wedding. Very simple pattern and great instructions!

oh good! I'm glad it was of use to you, I'd love to see a photo!
This tutorial was made quite hastily and I forgot to add in a few details but it seems to work none the less I guess

I love, love, love this and I am going to make it ... tomorrow. But I have a question first- do the raw edges require hemming? Like around the neck line and such.

well the fabric I used just rolled under on itself but you probably would need to hem it or over lock/over stitch it. All depends on the fabric you use really, just see how you go, having a raw edge might add a rustic look.

Thanks for the tutorial! This dress is gorgeous! Can you give us a basic idea on how to determine how much fabric we need to make this amazing dress?

LauraTolton In reply to moutngrrl [2012-09-11 08:42:40 +0000 UTC]

I am 5'9" and if I remember correctly, I used around 3 meters of fabric and the bolt was 60 cm wide.
If you can drape the fabric over you at the shop to see how long you would like or need it.

* * AFTER STEP FIVE ** turn it inside out to hide the stitching.

Ohh I wanna try this! And I'm 5'9" also
Can I ask what kind of fabric you used? I know absolutely nothing about fabrics.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LauraTolton In reply to dreamshadows [2012-04-13 18:39:26 +0000 UTC]

I used a stretch cotton jersey as my budget was limited. It hung and gathered beautifully but I wouldn't recommend it for long periods of wearing as it stretched and kept falling off my shoulders. If you can, get a cotton/wool mix which will be similar to the film version and will hold up better.

when you've finished all the steps turn it inside out yes! Damn, I can't believe I didn't put that in the tutorial.

And you're welcome, I'd love to see what you make !

How much fabric did you use? How tall are you? Sorry if you've answered that somewhere else... anyway this is nice and clearly explained (important for others who are no seamstresses) and the finished product is lovely

LauraTolton In reply to White-Rose-Tree [2011-02-12 11:53:19 +0000 UTC]

I am 5'9" and used I think, if I remember correctly, I used around 4 metres of fabric. I always think it best to have too much rather than too little just in case. I hope this helps you, I assume you are thinking of making it? x

White-Rose-Tree In reply to LauraTolton [2011-02-12 19:05:20 +0000 UTC]

Possibly

I might look as though I'm swimming in it, though. But thank you. This is one of those simple costume staples that it always helps to have instructions around for...

LauraTolton In reply to White-Rose-Tree [2011-02-15 20:38:12 +0000 UTC]

I think you will be fine with it, if it's too long it's a simple shape so you could just trim it till it's the right length for you. this length did leave a nice trail behind me so I would suggest getting a little less fabric if you are shorter than me best of luck with it x

This a really good way to make a dress like this! Very clever indeed. What material did you use for it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LauraTolton In reply to Saph-S [2010-10-04 20:12:55 +0000 UTC]

cotton jersey, I wanted to use wool but it was made with short notice and I couldn't find a fabric suitable. The cotton jersey worked perfectly only it's not ideal for and authentic historical look
