The book is A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin and it's the first in A Song of Ice and Fire series.
A little warning though, it's the furthest thing from Harry Potter, as it can be! It's quite violent and much more bleak in tone. But if you like your fantasy w/ lots of great character development & realism, it's pretty good.
