Chapter 4I had finished work and I decided to go on a stroll by the lake alone; as I did most nights searching for my shooting star. It was a full moon tonight and everything looked like it was covered in silver paint. The lake was as still as glass, nothing moved on its surface. The atmosphere was nippy with the night air and it sent chills down my spine. My bare arms and legs were covered in goose bumps due to the fact that I was still in uniform. I looked back towards the café, only to see it as a speck in the distance. Suddenly I heard something coming from behind me…
“Heyyy, honey! Miss me?” It was the guy from my first day, but he wasn’t alone. Around him were five other guys.
I did not agree to the vibes I was receiving from these guys and I automatically took a fighting stance. “What do you want?” I said glaring at each of them.
“Ooooo, feisty are we? Why don’t we go somewhere nice? I’ll show you a great time.”
“No, now leave me alone!” I yelled not showing an ounce of fear. I could not show fear, I knew I would be unable to take on all six of them at the same time. My best bet was to get somewhere where my voice could be heard. I wished with all my might that whoever hears me was strong and could protect me.
I began walking back to the café when one of the guys dared to stand in my way. I kicked him in the face so hard he fell to the ground and I smashed his face deep into the earth, hearing the sound of his nose breaking ever so easily. Now I sprinted for my life, screaming at the top of my lungs. But the day I needed my footing the most it failed me…
Violently I crashed to the ground, almost falling into the lake. I could feel the burn on my face, hands and knees where they had skidded against the land. I stumbled to get up but I was too late and my hair was vigorously yanked by one of the men. I cried out in pain, tears now streaming down my face.
“You little bitch! How dare you hit Tony!” The man who held me yelled, bringing my face closer to his.
“Now, now Hyoue,” the guy from the café said, “we don’t want her to be hurt while we have our fun, do we?” My eyes widened what on earth were they going to do to me! I have to get away! I have to!
Hyoue threw me to the ground, causing more scrapes to occur. I raised my head to look at the men but I was kicked in the face sending me back to the ground. I could taste the warm, rusty taste of blood in my mouth. Then another kick came, right onto my back and my blood curtailing scream followed. I knew they broke a rib or two.
Another man pulled me up by my hair, “How do you feel now! Bitch!” He looked at me wanting a reply, and I spat my blood filled spit over his face. Now I was in for it.
He punched me in the jaw and I could already feel it starting to swell. He hurled me to the ground and I could feel the lake water on my finger tips. Using all my strength I clutched the ground and tried to crawl away, the wet soil dug deep into my nails. I got about 3 feet when I was kicked in the side again by one of the men. Then another kick followed and another and another…
Was I going to die? What did I do to deserve this! Had I committed a sin? NO! I did NOTHING to deserve this! I wanted to do so much more with my life. Fall in love, get married, have children, grandchildren, do something with my life! Yet now with the way I was feeling, it seemed like a distant future…
I managed to look up to the sky and I saw what I had been looking for for a long time, a shooting star… I wished with all my might.
“Help me…” But my voice was just a whisper in the wind. Or was that all it took?
Slowly a dark figure rose through the luminescent lake and it stood on the water still as stone. The figures eyes glowed a scarlet red and gazed upon my weak body. What was it?
“Who the hell are you!? You wanna to try and stop us? I’d like to see you try!” One of the guys yelled and then he kicked me in the face, forcing me into the ground even farther. Blood from my face was blurring my vision but within a blink of an eye the dark figure was gone.
“Where did it g—” The dark figure smashed its knee into the man sending him flying into a tree! The figure stared into my eyes, but I could still not see its face. Rapidly three of the other men tried to ‘superman’ the figure, yet in one smooth motion it used one leg and stomped them all to the ground. All who was left standing was the black haired man who came to the café a month ago.
“H-hey buddy, we don’t have to result in violence do we?” The man stuttered. In one flowing motion the dark figure grabbed the man’s face and slammed it into the ground so hard I could feel the earth vibrate under my numb body. I looked at all the lifeless bodies on the ground.
“Di-did you kill them?” I whispered, trying to gather the strength to move my swollen lips.
The dark figure looked into my eyes and I could not look away, such a piercing gaze could not be turned away from. The figure walked ever so fluidly toward me. And as the crimson eyes starred onto my pathetic body, the moonlight gave my first glimpse of the figure…
It was a guy, around my age. He had long black hair that was lightly tied in a pony tail. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, but what looked like bits and parts of metal armor. His pale chest had many scars and one tattoo. The tattoo was of the grim reaper, holding a scythe that was wrapped around the base of his neck. On it there were words but I could not read them… His pants were baggy and had several tears in them. On his side he had a red sheathed katakana that had this weird detailing that I had never seen before. He was my knight…
His red eyes slowly turned into a yellow. His eyes were cat like, and they drew me in even farther…
“Wha-” I began but then the piercing pain in my ribs felt like a knife stabbing into my body. I couldn’t move as the pain spread rapidly over my body and I blacked out…
