This is a truly stunning photograph, but I think it would be better if she wasn't wearing that green leotard. It kind of ruins the flow. If it were beige or pink even... Anyway, it's still beautiful.

....I often don't have the opportunity to wardrobe-shop in a shoot.. I have to go w/ the flow..
comment appreciated.

Ahh such a beautiful and flowing shot. Great capture; retains a lot of movement ^^ And such a wonderful contrast of colours with the sharp rich red against the stark white background.

You really do seem to like using fabric as a prop in alot of your images.. Is it just to break up the image and add a little more to it? Or any other reason that I wouldn't be aware of?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

lawrencew In reply to Vumnoo [2005-09-21 02:17:21 +0000 UTC]

Probably because it enhaces the movement that otherwise looks static in some ballet shots

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Vumnoo In reply to lawrencew [2005-09-21 06:17:58 +0000 UTC]

yes I've noticed how some of yours can seem that way, even when there is obvious movement (like a shot with the subject mid air)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

lawrencew In reply to Vumnoo [2005-09-21 06:52:14 +0000 UTC]

.... interesting problem isn't it?
The dancer is full of movement and yet we'll fire off two or three flash units @ 1/2000 to freeze the motion (and kill it).... 'cause the public want to see it all clearly.
I think that's why Lois Greenfield shoots the dancers as a group; to capture a "Muyrbridge" sequence which develops the flow of an individual movement in a single shot.
Which is why I've now begun to use tungsten and flash combined (see Sheryn K) with a dragged shutter ( 1/10 ) to incorporate blur sequence and the peak of the movement in one.
Makes for an interesting shoot.... 1/ dancer begins movement, 2/ fire shutter, 3/ fire flash manually and hope the dancer got it right and your timing is up to the mark. Repeat as often as dancer has energy!
Ta for the further comment as I've not really analysed this before ... more instinctual.

hehe, I never seem to have much success firing off the flash manually with a shutter speed above half a second, I just can't seem to do it..
Although I would have to say I'm suprised at how much blur you achieved with only a 1/10 shutter. But the motion definately gives the picture a more lively and active feel to it.

Thank you for sharing some of your technique (I try to sponge up as much as possible from others, hoping it will rub off in a positive way)

...and don't forget to put the camera on a tripod.
The movement in Sheryn K started to the left of the dancer and went over the top, probably 1/2 sec... getting the exposure right is where digital comes into its own.
Ta for the reply.

Vumnoo In reply to lawrencew [2005-09-22 03:55:54 +0000 UTC]

Oh, Pretty much whereever I go with my camera, there is a tripod in the other hand! Camera shake shits me to tears. So I just choose to eliminate it!
(Oh and I love a good long exposures, with small appetures). Yes and digital is just soo helpful!

It is a really nice capture, the motion and cloth are well postioned. A higher resolution would be better though.
