Description Top marks to for drawing this for me and kudos to Archie Comic's very own for the coloring. You two did solid work.

Ah yes, more supporting character love. What can I say? They intrigue me the most.

This piece is about one of my favorite characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog comics by Archie Comics, Geoffrey St. John. Quite the complicated history this character has had, so bear with me.

Orphaned from war, his father Ian (also a favorite, I love dad characters) dying in the service of their king, poor Geoffrey was vulnerable to the manipulating forces of the Ixis wizard Naugus.

Poisoned at such a young age, Geoffrey was turned into Naugus' apprentice and commanded to infiltrate the underground resistance, headed by Princess Sally and Sonic the Hedgehog. He served alongside them, befriended them, and fell in love with one of their members, Hershey, resulting in their marriage. Away from his master's voice, Geoffrey was free to be who he could have been had Naugus never gotten his hooks into him.

Sadly, Hershey disappeared during a mission and was presumed dead, sending Geoffrey into depression which caused him to return to his former mission. He deposed King Acorn, got Naugus on the throne, and lost his friends in the process. He never seemed happy about this decision. He never appeared fond of Naugus and often looked at his former friends from the shadows with regret, but his master was all he knew. Or all he was trained to know. And given Naugus' emotional influence of people, perhaps all he could feel.

I can't see Geoffrey as a villain. More of a victim than anything. Kind of a jerk from the start sure (but let's be honest, a lot of characters had their jerk moments, like Antoine and he was a favorite of mine then and still is), but he always worked for the good of the kingdom and it's people. He's a case of trying to do the right thing, but doing it the wrong way. Or in his particular case, the only way he knew how.

Wow, quite the info dump, huh? I am nothing if not thorough (and possibly long-winded).

I do wonder what his father would think of his son, having given his life to protect the queen and the prince. I'd like to think, in spite of all that has happened, he would still remember the precious little time they had together and love him no matter what.

I'll be honest with you, I'm really not a fan of the direction this character was suddenly taken, Ixis apprentice and all. I don't know what the future holds for Mr. St. John in the Lost Hedgehog Tales. For all we know, this was part of some crazy scheme he had as a quadruple agent for the crown. So, I'm going to be optimistic and hope one of my favorite characters gets a happy ending.

Everyone deserves a Second Chance to make things right. I forgive him. I hope he can join the secret freedom Fighters.

Yeah, I sympathize with that. I'm all for a character being challenged and pushed, but this felt a bit much.

Even though I'm not happy for what Geoffrey did, and yet I can't hate him for that. He was nothing more but a pawn in Naugus' game; if Geoffrey had known the truth about how the war REALLY started and what Naugus and Kodos did in the past, I don't think Geoffrey would've agreed to work for that creep. I think there should be a petition to bring back the Ken Penders victims and conclude the Mecha Sally saga with having Geoffrey saving the freedom fighters life, reunites with Hershey, redeems himself by taking down Naugus, and for a big finale Geoffrey will be forgiven. That's what I want to see.

I know right? XD I don't know what I was thinking. It may have been because of the comics I read when I was younger, I saw Geoffrey as mindlessly following King Naugus. No logic what so ever in it.

Quite a few people are see him or are seeing him this light. I think characters like this require more analysis and observation. I wish things hadn't gone this way for Geoffrey, but I'll wait and see how things develop for him. Hopefully well.

Thanks for stopping by.

I agree. Geoffrey deserves a fighting chance to redeem himself, reunites with his wife, Hershey, and be forgiven by his comrades and everyone else. Even if I have to make a fan-fiction that's both non-fiction and fiction and both canon and non-canon.

The Lost Hedgehog Tales. The stories Ian Flynn was working on before things got so out of control behind the scenes and he was forced to adapt, which lead to the whole rewritten universe. He's going to publish them on his webpage. Chapter 1 is already out.

Awww, that's a rather poignant scene there!
In light of that backstory, I sure hope there's a way for him to reform and be free of that Naugus... I never read the Archie comics, but he sounds a right jerk... (as opposed to Geoffrey himself, who simply seems misguided)

For a time, I did resent Geoffrey for betraying Sonic and co like that. But now I really understand why and many other reasons...

*sigh* I was such a judgmental @$$...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LazyRayFinkle In reply to scifiguy9000 [2015-08-19 23:10:03 +0000 UTC]

I think a lot of people were resentful. I certainly didn't like it being a fan of the character, but with the explanation given, it still sucked, but I could see how he came to this path.

Don't be hard on yourself. In their own unique way, comics are great a teaching subtle lessons.

Thanks for stopping by.

Great deviation, it's actually, slightly touching.  And, you know, I actually made a mini comic where Geoffrey actually gets payback on Naugus, just as he's about to finish off Sonic.  I'm not gonna spoil anything else, if you want to look at it.
