Well when the TV show first started, I kind of dug it...... but then it started spiralling out of control and grew to monstrous fan boy and girl proportions..... A day wouldn't go by without me hearing some one raving about how so and so pokemon was better than some other jokemon and pickachu was squeeeeee ..... and stuff. But the real problem was the show got boring and predictable.
Besides, pokemon are cute, I have a penchant for cute things dying (especially when they're little fantasy animals)..... but I'm sick like that ahahaa.
I used to have a little art project, Pokedeath 2000. The tag line was "gotta kill 'em all!". It pretty much was just me drawing my anime self killing all the different kinds of pokemon that shitted me off....... yeah.
Um, anyways, awesome pic though mate!

Haha Nice.
I'm actually in the same boat as you... well, sans the penchant for cute homicide.. well, actually, I did really like Creatures on the Commodore 64... ever play that? That was awesome. But I digress. I too, dug the show in it's early stages... although I didn't admit to anyone at the time But any attraction quickly wore off and the mammoth momentum of its popularity confuses me to this day.
This pic is more of a nod to Smash Bros Brawl than Pokemon.

Um, no, don't remember Creatures, though I was a C64 connoisseur!
Yeah, it's popularity is like WTF?! I mean seriously, it was ok, it got old quick, but christ kids lapped that shit up! AND the pokemon corporation milked it for all it's worth. Like seriously, the show has only ONE flimsy premise, yet how many seasons has it been going on for?
Cute homicide for the win! ahahaaa.

Yeah, I don't think Samus' character really allows fir an expression like that... but oh well.
It's funny, I didn't mean any kind of sexual innuendo with this pic, the idea never even crossed my mind. But after I did it, I searched for other Pikachu/Samus pics and it seems that's a pretty popular theme. What a bizarre world we live in

Yes! This is so great! I love their expressions, Samus winking at Pikachu, like she's saying... job well done, little furry ball of electricity! And then Pika's all like, I'm pressed against your boobs, lol
Well done on her body too, nice, simple lines and great structure. Pikachu looks round and cuddly too I love her hair as well, with the varying thickness and thinness.
Yep, I'm gonna have to fave this

lazytigerart In reply to bratchny [2008-10-08 02:12:17 +0000 UTC]
Actually, the winking was supposed to be a face mashing, eye protecting itself kind of thing. Never could get stuff like that to look right.
Thanks for the crit, homey. I've been thinking a lot about the direction I want to take my style. It's always had a pretty simple cartoony feel to it and I've been wondering for a while whether I should venture into more detailed colouring and move away from my gradient look. But the more I think about it, the more I think I like the basic look of my stuff. I see all these other amazing artists with all this detail in their work and it blows me away, but I don't know if that sort of look is really 'me'... or whatever. So I'm thinking I more what to enhance and refine what I'm already doing rather than approach my stuff in an entirely different direction. What do you think? You're stuff kicks ass.
And thanks for the fave

bratchny In reply to lazytigerart [2008-10-08 11:22:38 +0000 UTC]
Ohh, now that I look at it, their eyes are 'winking' at the same side as their touching cheeks, so it does look like they're face smushing sorry about that! I think, maybe you could have made their other eyes squint a little too, so it looks a little more obvious.
You know, I love your style already, as a simple style with defined lines and such is fun to look at, and draw (look at my shit for instance lol). But, I think it'd be really cool to try taking your style to another level, like you said. You don't have to move away from the gradient look, just add that into the more detailed colouring if you want. I would love to see you try another colouring style too! But yeah, you don't even have to entirely change it, just enhance.
I know it feels weird to try new things with art, seeing as I'm happy and comfortable with my hard lineart, crazy cel shading style. But sometimes I think of changing it up, expand my horizons, so to speak. Like you, I see all the awesome artwork here, with so much detail and creativity, and it makes me jealous lol - but also makes me inspired... but not enough to put pen to tablet...
Your artistic style is very distinguishable, everytime I check my devwatch, and I see one of your pictures, I know it's yours before looking at the artist name.
Anyway, yeah! All I can say is, keep it up, but also try another take, if you're thinking about it, it's probably best to do it and see how it goes.

lazytigerart In reply to bratchny [2008-10-10 02:41:27 +0000 UTC]
It's funny, I'm glad you say distinguishable because that's kinda something I value more than quality almost. Like I said when I look around at some of these awesome artists, their work is mountains above anything I do but it all kind of looks the same. You can look at 20 anime style pieces done by 20 different people and not be able to tell that they're not done by the same one. So while my work is essentially crap in comparison, at least it's kinda 'unique' crap
I'm thinking maybe the direction I wanna go is a combination of soft and hard shading. This is a terrible example, but it's the closest thing I can think of: [link] I did my colouring as usual, but then went back over it and added a layer of hard edge shade as well. It doesn't work all that well here, but I think it might be a starting point for a direction to head in. once I'm done with Rocksalt, I'm going to have a good look at anatomy and eyes specifically. Learn how to make my characters recognisable from something other than just their hair
Thanks for being such a good chat buddy. I wanna do you some fanart, what's your pleasure?

bratchny In reply to lazytigerart [2008-10-11 10:25:21 +0000 UTC]
Hey! Well your style is distinguishable, I've not seen any drawings like yours before, and if I can say, remember when you sent in pictures to NMS? Well, that's when I starting enjoying your work, and everytime I bought the mag, I'd check to see if you sent something in, and when you did, I knew it was yours before I read who it was from If I can be honest, you actually helped me to feel like drawing more video game characters, your style helped me to get my style. Gay, I know
I know what you mean by all the anime styles looking the same... but once in a while you get awesome pieces that you know were drawn by a particular person. That's what is cool, because anime is basically all the same, big eyes, small muoths, big heads, weird shit... but when you find an artist who uses those sorts of trademarks, but also gives their own into it, like detail for instance... I love art with detail, and why I don't really like most anime, like from crappy cartoons, it all looks the same cos they dont have detail, it's always refreshing to see a 'manga artist' break from the lines and make their own style incorporate into the anime trademarks... like Yukito Kishiro who draws Alita. He's my favourite cos he does that.
I really like the example you showed me, that's what I meant, add the simple gradient shading but also bring in some hard colours. It makes your pictures pop out
You're welcome for the chat, I like talking to you
And oh man, I'd love it if you drew me something! I don't know... hmm... maybe draw something from Zelda for me? Like Link or Zelda? Any character you from Zelda you feel like drawing would be awesome. Thanks a lot bud
