EDIT: UPDATE 2008: Go to [link] to see my current workstation setup.----------------------------
This is my workstation where I draw comics, separate from my computer room (to reduce distractions ^_-). As you can see, I'm hard at work on a page from Peach Fuzz volume 2 (pick up the first volume at your local bookstore in the manga section!)
Some of the stuff pictured:
An 11 x 17 sheet of Bristol board with a work-in-progress comic page.
Pencil, erasers, and plenty of rulers.
Reference material! Character and clothing designs in my sketchbook, character turnarounds on the right, and the first volume of Peach Fuzz to ensure consistency in the character art and settings.
And of course, I have a large mirror on display because I'm narcissistic... er, just kidding, it's so I can do poses and facial expressions to help me while I'm drawing. Some inspirational pictures are also posted up (note the cheerleading Lina Inverse to cheer me on, my beloved Utena, and some art by Atsuko Nakajima, among others).

Lindsay, you have the NEATEST desk I've ever seen for a comic artist
My desk for Divalicious! was:
paper, mess of pens and pencils stuck to a blob of blu-tack (I work on an animation lightbox), erasers which constantly fell on the floor, pile of teen fashion magazines(ref) and laptop nearby if I needed to pull up a page.
And I really need to get a decent mirrot :/

This reminds me that I need to pick up another copy of Peach Fuzz sometime. I bought myself a copy, but left it with my younger siblings-in-law after I found out how much they loved it. As it turns out, one of their local papers in Tampa runs Peach Fuzz in their Sunday funnies so they were already familiar with it.
I was surprised and rather pleased to see PF in a mainstream newspaper. Is it run in many others, do you know, or is that something that Tokyopop handles?

oh! I love when artists show these kind of pictures. Gives me an idea of how to set up a better working enviroment. plus, WIP always fascinate me. Seeing something in the process of becoming art. It's almost like seeing a glimpse into the secret and intimate relationship between an artist and their work.
As of right now i've been doing watercolours on the living room floor...and i hate how everyone's feet are going by stepping on my brushes and knocking over my water. or just peering over my shoulder going, "whaaatcha doin??". *sigh* A room would be sooo nice. I feel like a sad excuse for an artist. especially since i want to sell my paintings. Perhaps its my own inhibitions holding me back. Why am i talking about this? oh yeah...
How do you do it? How do you be an artist?? Sounds like a silly question...but. The art almost seems like the easy part. I enjoy doing it. But getting it out there. Completely baffles me! Any advice would be nice. ^_^ Sorry for going off on your page. *blush* T_T

btw, just wondering--do you ink traditionally or digitally?
keep up the awesome work on Peach Fuzz, and congratulations on your accomplishments so far!

Currently, Tokyopop is my publisher. They originally discovered me through their Rising Stars of Manga competition. They also accept submissions nowadays. They prefer artists to be out of school before they hire you, but do check out their guidelines if you're interested in getting into the manga industry when you're older. They have a ton of information on their website: [link] .
P.S. If you like rodents, I think you'll like Peach Fuzz. did you have a chance to check it out?

Um, Lindsay, you don't mind if I call you Lindsay do you, or do you prefer Ms. Chibos...? Anyhow, I just realized something, you work on 11x17 paper. And I could figure something out. I thought that Peach Fuzz was all Illustrated, or at least, I thought that's what is was when I looked at it at Borders. Anyhow, you must have a larger scanner than you did in your CD tutorial, because how on earth do you scan in those pics to illustrate them. I figured you either must have have a bigger scanner, do a lot of trips to Kinko's, or I was just imagining things at the store, and the book wasn't illustrated, although, the last time I checked, I swore it was illustrated...anyhow, keep up the great work, and I just bought your book on Amazon.com but I do hope it has everything I was hoping for like more stuff than the CD tutorial, plus everything updated for the latest Photoshop/painter/illustrator and all...I've become attached to live trace/paint and all...it's wonderful to create vector lines that you can then move into photoshop...and the version in CS2 is even better....mahahahah

Lindsay's fine.
I use the same scanner mentioned in the tutorial-- I scan the 11" x 17" pages in two parts and piece them together in Photoshop (not as tricky as it sounds, and actually something covered in the newer book version. ^^ Thanks for picking up a copy btw. I know you'll enjoy it!).

Your welcome, I just hope I can improve, I was having a lot of trouble using the water color method Jared created in the CD tutorial to create hair. I know it tells all about it, I just can't seem to get it to work in Painter IX...the hair never turns out right. I keep wondering if it is because I'm using a mouse instead of a stylus. But anyhow. I'll study the book as best I can, I know another great tome of knowlege from you guys will always be of help...I hope you guys write some more, you do a really good job! ^_^

About 6-7 months, or roughly a page a day plus prelim work like scripting, roughs, character design, cover art, etc.

Nice to see how you lay things out.
I often consider making some turn-arounds / char reference sheets for my comic characters, any tips?

p.s. I find it interesting that you layout the word bubbles on the paper verses on the computer. Do you think that helps with the overall composition?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
LCibos In reply to dreamling [2005-09-23 18:26:13 +0000 UTC]
Definitely! I feel that drawing the word bubbles by hand gives them more personality, helps balance the artwork and makes it *part* of the artwork, as opposed to the way a lot of American comics are done where the word bubbles are placed over top of the artwork at the end, kind of like an afterthought.
Plus, that way you aren't wasting time drawing stuff that just ends up getting covered by the word bubbles.

dreamling In reply to LCibos [2005-09-23 20:43:16 +0000 UTC]
I've begun to try to plan out places where the the bubbles _should_ go, but I generally pass it off to the writer for her final edits and lettering. I totally understand about drawing things that get covered up.

i don't know if you'll even see this comment with how many you get, as well as you've probably hear this 10 million times, but i wish i had half of those materials XD. it'd make my own attempt at comic work much easier, especially if i could afford bristol board of that size and a t-square. i always loved looking at pictures like this because it lets you see into the life of the artist. their workspace says alot about them. ^_^. i am a friend of Bettina's, so i know how much works goes into but a single page of manga. i do have a question though... do you have any advice on drawing backgrounds? it's a spot that i have alot of trouble with so i like to get different opinions until i find a way of doing it that im happy with ;. anyway, congratulations on your book deal and keep up the awesome work! ^__^
