i used to love birds
got the books to prove it, species and pictures and all that shit
yeah
maybe i was a stupid-assed kid
or perhaps i've forgotten something fundamental that i once knew
but whatever the case, it's gone now
yesterday my mother cried about a dead panda
and i felt nothing
either for her or the dead cub
and i couldn't tell you where that comes from either
my heart might be bitter and salty
call it what you will
but i know it's still there, or else the pain would go away
and, maybe then, a movement
one begun long ago
would be complete
