Description A Sherlock BBC papercutting featuring Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in front of their flat.

It's a bit rough; if I were making a proper project of this I'd call this a draft and do another version with cleaner cuts. But for an experiment I think it came out pretty well.

Done with craft knife on regular letter-size paper.

Edit: Wow, a DD! Thank you to =xthumbtakx and ^FrockTarts , and to everyone for the lovely comments and favs! This paper experiment was the one that led to many more, so I'm thrilled that people like it so much.

When I first looked at this, I didn't understand what it was. I thought it was painted, or an optical illusion of some sort. And then I realized that what I see is actually cut out of paper. Masterfully done!

So nicely done. I think the rough cuts add a more gestural, handmade quality.

Is paper best for this sort of thing? Because I've been using a stanley knife on cardboard and it comes out quite badly. Any tips?

What problems have you been having with your cuttings?

My early paper cuttings (like this one) were done with regular printer paper, which worked well. Later I switched to cardstock, which I like even better because it's thick enough to be sturdy (especially with free-standing paper sculptures like this one: [link] ) but not too thick to cut fairly easily.

It also helps to have a knife that's lightweight (so it's not too unwieldy to handle) and very sharp (so that it cuts the paper cleanly, without dragging/ripping it).

Thanks! I was unsure whether to even start this project, but when the idea came to me to do that with their coat collars, I just had to give it a go. All of my paper art since then (except my paper snowflakes) have some 3D element to them.

I've seen a lot of artists do this type of paper art (though never with the 3d twist), and i've been meaning to try my hand at it for ages.. some year!
