I snagged a P&LE hardhat (with their script herald embossed on it), a single grade crossing signal, a glass signal relay and tons of paperwork like employee rosters, rule books, signal guides, blueprints and company telephone directories on our first trip there. The place was wide open, heavily vandalized and the stuff was just out there blowing around. It needs to go to a historical society, that's really why I grabbed the stuff in the first place.

Every time I see this place, I get a feeling of despair. I wish it could be new again. I'd have loved to have seen it in its heyday!

It was something to see back in the day.

There was a small movement to preserve it, but that fell trough.

How sad. I can't believe she's still standing, I thought for sure the site would have been leveled by now.

I took rolls of shots of Gateway back around '95 or so when I was visiting a friend in Y'town (and I've got some prints that Howard Fogg did back in the day too). We explored every inch and mourned the vandalism that we saw. Of course back then most of her glass was still intact, but the entire site was wide open with employee records, waybills and all sorts of things just blowing in the wind. It was a surreal experience.

You've captured the scene well, and the mood and lighting is fitting.

It really is.
It's hard to believe but there are still waybills and records blowing out of the tower still!
Here are some newer pics of the tower's interior. [link]

Thanks, when I saw this scene, it almost felt like I was in a Fogg painting.

Oh and sorry for such a long delay in replying.

Thanks Don!
I have been waiting for a shot like this since my first trip to Gateway. I was really hoping to get a train going by to, but no dice.

I try to explain to my kids that you don't need a bright sunny day to take pictures, sometimes the most interesting shots are the ones with atmosphere. There are some photos on that web site that I sent you that were taken in Downtown Pittsburgh, it was dark and rainy, the photos are brilliant! Look: [link]
