Description
The 1976 revival of Guys and Dolls featured an all-black cast and Motown-style musical arrangements. Robert Guillame played the role of Nathan Detroit, a down on his luck gambler. He’s in a long-term relationship with a nightclub dancer named Adelaide who’s pushing for marriage. Nathan is overconfident and flakey, but he’s got a heart of gold.
A 1976 U.S. Supreme Court case established the freedom of tribal governments to operate independently, a unanimous decision that permanently changed the gaming industry in America and the financial fortunes of countless Native Americans. Other Supreme Court rulings decided that a state did not have the right to assess a tax on the property of a Native American living on tribal land absent a specific Congressional grant of authority to do so and gave tribes greater control over the way in which health care services were provided on tribal lands. This led to many Native Americans building casinos on tribal land that set prizes higher than would be allowed by state laws. Here’s a dealer who makes herself a little sexy so the gamblers look at her more than their cards.
Logan’s Run was a popular science fiction film in 1976. In the year 2274, humanity lives in a hedonistic utopia under a series of geodesic domes. But there’s a catch. People get culled off at age 30. Jenny Agutter played Jessica 6, a woman who runs away with Logan and discovers the outside world where there’s sunshine, plants and cats. And they learn that living past 30 is possible. Can they reveal this to everyone else? A little computer magic turns a martini charm into an ankh.
Murder by Death was a popular comedy/mystery film in 1976. The mysterious Lionel Twain invites five renowned detectives and their sidekicks to his mansion. He challenges the guests to solve a murder that will occur at midnight with a reward of $1 million that will be presented to the winner. Maggie Smith played Dora Charleston, a parody of Nora Charles from The Thin Man series. She and her husband are wealthy society types who solve mysteries.
Apple Computer Company was founded on April 1, 1976, by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne as a partnership. The company's first product was the Apple I, a computer designed and hand-built entirely by Wozniak. The Apple I had a memory of 4 KB of RAM that was expandable to 8 KB or 48 KB using expansion cards. (The computer on my front door uses more RAM, but we all gotta start somewhere!) Liza Loop was a member of the Homebrew Computer Club. She managed a public-access computer center and touted the educational opportunities home computers could present. This is based on what she looks like now with a modern laptop.
The Bad News Bears was a popular sports comedy film in 1976. It starred Walter Matthau as an alcoholic ex-baseball pitcher named Morris Buttermaker who becomes a coach for a youth baseball team known as the Bears. A very young Tatum O’Neal played Amanda Wurlitzer, the 11-year-old star pitcher for the Bears who feels insecure about her tomboy image. Buttermaker becomes a father figure to her and many of the boys on the team.
Tawny Godin won the Miss America title in 1976. She was the first Miss New York to take the crown. Her talent was playing an original piano composition she called "Images in Pastels". She would later change her name to Tawny Little after her first marriage and became a television personality. A year after winning Miss America, Tawny would win $8000 dollars on The $128,000 Question for her knowledge on Shakespeare. That dress style must’ve been popular in 76. I Already used it for Piggy and Dora. Computer magic makes it pink for Tawny. Used a little computer magic to make her crown and scepter closer to the real colors as well.
In 1976, the Olympics were hosted in Montreal, Quebec in Canada. Kornelia Ender of the former East Germany became the first woman swimmer to win four gold medals at a single Olympic Games, all in world record times. Unbeknownst to her, she and the entire team were being secretly dosed with steroids by the team doctors. When Ender suspected that what they were being given wasn’t just vitamins, she refused to partake. This led to her being banned from the team. She is now a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and works as a self-employed physiotherapist in her own practice while married to bobsledder Steffen Grummt. I used computer magic to put a red stripe on her swimsuit to look more like the one she wore in the Olympics.
