Description

In 1979, Hanna-Barbera decided to revive (no pun intended) the character of Casper the Friendly Ghost while cashing in on popular crime dramas such as CHiPs and Charlie’s Angels. Casper was teamed up with two flying motorcycle cops from the year 2179 in the short-lived 13 episode series Casper and the Angels. (I swear I’m not making this up.) Mini is the ditzy red head. Maxi is a more clever but short tempered African American woman. They fight crime with Casper and another ghost called Hairy Scary. I swear, I’m not making this up. I did have to go with what was available in the game rather than what was strictly accurate.

Norma Rae is a 1979 drama film directed by Martin Ritt, starring Sally Field in the title role. The film tells the story of Norma Rae Webster, a worker at the O.P. Henley Textile Mill somewhere in the Deep South, who becomes involved in labor union activities at the mill after Reuben Warshovsky of the Textile Workers Union of America arrives to organize the workers. Sally Field would win an Oscar for her role. The Oscar for “Best Original Song” would go to “It Goes Like It Goes”. I had already done Sally Field in her role as Gidget. I decided to use the same face even though the work is more mature to make her look happy and triumphant like she does on the film’s poster.

The Rose is a 1979 film directed by Mark Rydell starring Bette Midler in her first film appearance as a vulnerable, self-destructive rock singer looking for love. Rose’s story is somewhat based on the life of Janis Joplin, who also led a tangled life of sex, drugs and rock and roll. The film won three Golden Globes.

The most top-rated TV show in 1979 was…60 Minutes. It’s a news show, so I can’t really do anything for that. The second most top-rated TV show in 1979 was Three’s Company. This American sitcom was based on the British sitcom Man About the House. In order to share an affordable Santa Monica apartment with two attractive young ladies, Janet and Chrissy, a cooking student named Jack has to pretend to be gay around the landlords, Mr. and Mrs. Roper. Complications are introduced through a variety of misunderstandings and mishaps, often caused by the thinking-impaired apartment mates or their cumbersome friends. Joyce DeWitt played Janet. Suzanne Somers played Chrissy. I dressed Chrissy the way she did for a trip to an amusement park. I dressed Janet the way she does when she’s watering her houseplants.

After a year on the West End, Evita made its debut on Broadway in 1979 and would later win the Tony for Best Musical. The musical starts with Evita’s funeral, and then becomes a flashback from the musical’s narrator, known only in the script as “Che”. In the beginning, Eva María Duarte is a girl from a humble rural Argentine family in the 1930s. She vows to make a better life for herself at any cost, and travels to the capital chasing her dream of becoming a star. The story is loosely based on the life of Argentinian First Lady Eva Péron. I’ve done her twice in suit dresses. Her she is in the white ballgown she wears in the “Don’t Cry for me, Argentina” number.

The Music for UNICEF concert took place in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations in New York on the 9th of January 1979. The concert was televised internationally and raised money for the UN International Children’s fund. Olivia Newton-John performed a song called “The Key” and did a duet with Andy Gibb with “Rest Your Love on Me.” This year would also see Olivia Newton-John perform “Hopelessly Devoted to You” for the Grammy Awards and the Academy Awards shows. I used the same make-up for when I did Newton-John in her costume from Grease, but she had straightened her hair for the UNICEF concert. RIP, Olivia Newton-John.

Next week is the first rap song to be played on the radio, the first artificial blood transfusion and the last Rudolph special and more.
