Description

Former First Lady Michelle Obama published her memoir Becoming in 2018. Described by the author as a deeply personal experience, the book talks about her roots and how she found her voice, as well as her time in the White House, her public health campaign, and her role as a mother. The book's 24 chapters (plus a preface and epilogue) are divided into three sections: Becoming Me, Becoming Us, and Becoming More. I’m not crazy about this “walking on water” background, but it’s about the right color. I based this on the white, off the shoulder outfit Mrs. Obama wore on the cover of her book. (I guessed the bottom and shoes.)

Circe by Madeline Miller was published in 2018 and was named Best Fantasy novel in the Goodreads Choice Awards. It’s the story of the witch Circe from Greek myth, as told from her point of view. I’ve done Circe before, but this is a different character. Miller’s Circe had a pet lioness rather than a lion. She also had yellow eyes and streaked brown hair. She turned the nymph Scylla into a monster using the yellow Pharmaka blossoms. She had used the same blossoms to turn her beloved Glaucus into a sea god, only for him to spurn her in Scylla’s favor. I don’t mind a “walking on water” background for Circe since she is a goddess. (Though a low powered one.)

Toys R Us closed in 2018 after 70 years of operation.  In early July 2018, it was reported that unknown benefactors had bought all of the remaining stock of two locations in North Carolina so they could be donated to charity. A combination of private equity ownership and people just preferring to buy toys online lead to the closing. They’re back in business with a .com and partnership with Macy’s. Here’s a Toys R Us kid playing with her toys.

The Shape of Water won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2018 and three other categories. It was the second fantasy film to win Best Picture. Elisa Esposito, who was found abandoned by the side of a river as an infant with scars on her neck, is mute and communicates with sign language. In 1962 she works as a custodian at a secret government laboratory in Baltimore, Maryland. Her life changes when she finds love with a strange amphibian man.

Alessia Cara won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 2018. She was the first Canadian to win this award. She also released the single “Growing Pains” in June. “A Little More” would come out in July. In September, she was the halftime performance at the 106th Grey Cup. In 2018, Cara produced a lot of singles, collaborations and her second album The Pains of Growing. The pop star is an advocate for mental health, having struggled with it herself. This is her offbeat business-casual red carpet look for the Grammy Awards.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child won the Tony for Best Play in 2018 as well as awards for direction and design. Delphini is the secret daughter of the long-defeated Lord Voldemort. Looking to bring her father back to life and in power, she deceives Harry’s and Draco’s sons (Albus and Scorpio respectively) into helping her secure a Time Turner. In the end, she is sent to Azkaban for murder and abuse of forbidden relics. From what I’ve seen, she dresses like someone who can’t decide if they’re punk or goth.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2018. Miriam “Midge” Maisel (played by Rachel Brosnahan) is a Jewish housewife from New York in the late 50’s with a talent for stand-up comedy. Season 2 saw Midge touring with her new manager and coach Susie and getting into a rivalry with another comedienne. She stumbled on her first stand up act directly after her husband left her and she went into a club wearing a blue nightgown and pink bathrobe.

Nadia Murad won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 in conjunction with Denis Mukwege for efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict. She is the first Iraqi and Yazidi to be awarded a Nobel Prize. At 19, Murad was kidnapped from her home in Kocho and enslaved by Islamic State fighters. She escaped and ran away to a refugee camp in Duhok. She gave her testimony to newspapers and spoke out against human trafficking. In 2016, Murad was appointed as the first-ever Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking for the UNODC and lives in Germany with her husband Abid Shamdeen, also a human rights activist.

Next week is extreme weather, athletic champions and Miss America.
