Description November 11: This is Veterans Day. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, World War I (Then known as The Great War) was ended with the Armistice of Germany. A year later, President Woodrow Wilson proposed that this be a day to remember those who died in service to their country and to show gratitude to the ones who finished their service.

November 12: This is the birthday of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a suffragist, abolitionist, social activist and figure in the early women's rights movement. When she married, she added her husband's name to her own but would not drop her last name and absolutely refused to go by Mrs. Henry Stanton. She was on her honeymoon in London when she met fellow abolitionist Lucretia Mott. Both women were appalled to find that many male abolitionists were not as open minded as they presented, denying women equal treatment. Family responsibilities made travel difficult for her, but she did write many of the speeches that traveled with Susan B. Anthony.

November 13: Naaaaants ingonyama bagithi Baba! On this day in 1997, The Lion King opened at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre. I made a loose approximation of Nala, though the Broadway costume is more elaborate. Adult Nala wears a headdress shaped like a lioness's face but I made do with the double buns Cub Nala wears. She gets a greater role in the Broadway show than in the animated film. For instance, in the film she only gets a defensive "I left to find help!" to explain why she left the pride lands. In the musical, we see she was being accosted by Scar who wanted her to bear his cubs and she gets a number called "Shadow Land" where she expresses her feelings about having to leave her home and family. If you want to see more fan art I did on The Lion King:  www.deviantart.com/le2/art/The…

November 14: On this day in 1889, Nellie Bly began her trip around the world. The journalist traveled by steamship and railroad all over the world and wrote about her experiences. In Singapore, she made her one major indulgence and bought a monkey who traveled with her. She was back in New York after seventy-two days. The famous journalist was a champion of the downtrodden, exposing cruelties in mental hospitals and unfair treatment elsewhere. She went to the front lines in Austria in World War I to report on the action.

November 15: On this day in 1805, The Lewis and Clark Expedition came to the Pacific Ocean. One important member of this expedition was Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman who served as guide and interpreter. While negotiating a trade to get horses, Sacagawea found that the chief of one tribe was her long lost brother. In this depiction, Sacagawea holds a peace pipe, symbolizing her role as peacemaker. Her name means "bird woman" so she wears some feathers.

November 16: On this day in 2001 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone premiered in the US and UK. (Where it was "Philosopher's" rather than "Sorcerer's") The school girl uniform in Love Nikki would be perfect...for a Ravenclaw. For a Gryffendor like Hermione, I needed a red tie and a gold (settled for pale yellow) skirt. I can live with the blue shirt, but white would be better. Yeah, I could've done Luna Lovegood, but I wanted someone who had been there from the beginning. Hermione Jean Granger was a very clever and mature girl who was quite surprised yet excited to find out she was a witch. Since muggleborns are looked down on by some wizarding folk, Hermione felt like she had a lot to prove and her perfectionism went into overdrive. It paid off. She became Minister for Magic in 2019.

November 17: This is National Take A Hike Day. Walking in the country strictly for pleasure developed in the 18th Century with the Romantic Movement. Nikki here wears sturdy boots and a brimmed hat and carries a trekking pole. Her compass is attached to her pack. She wears a camera because of the "Take nothing but pictures" ethic.

I didn't mean for it too, but this week had a travelling as a theme. Veterans traveled to the ends of the Earth to protect their home. Cady Stanton's words traveled the U.S. Nala had to leave her home to save it. Nellie Bly proved that women could travel on their own. Sacagawea guided men through the frontier. Hermione left home for a world of magic to find her place in it. Hikers live to travel.

What's next? Today is Mickey Mouse's birthday! The anniversary of the JFK assassination is this week, so I'll probably do something with Jaqueline Kennedy. There will also be Hip Hop Day, Mother Goose Day and more. If next week has a theme at all, I suppose it would be Creation and Destruction.
