Description February 17: On this day in 1965 Joan Rivers debuted on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. She was a trailblazer for female comedians. Wish the game had a red feather boa for her! Rivers would go on to occasionally guest host on The Tonight Show and eventually got her own talk show. One time, someone here on DA compared me to Joan Rivers, thinking he was being insulting. I was far too flattered to be insulted! I could only dream of being half as funny and clever as she was.

February 18: Yoko Ono was born on this day in 1933 in Tokyo, Japan. I dressed her in something similar to what she wore when she married John Lennon. A lot of people blame her for the Beatles breaking up, but there were really several mitigating factors. Her singing has been heavily criticized but her avant-garde artwork are thought provoking and often call for audience participation.

February 19: On this day in 1963 The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan was published, sparking second wave feminism in the US. Friedan's book pointed out that many women were unhappy with their lives as housewives but didn't want to say anything about it. Friedan argued that women needed to find their personal identity and find fulfillment by being their true selves instead of caving to the demands of society.

February 20: On this night in 1877 Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. I had already used Odette for World Ballet Day, so I made Odile. She is an evil duplicate of Odette, sent by Von Rothbart to take Odette's place and trick Prince Siegfried into betraying her.

February 21: This day is Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. I decided to make a cutesy girly-girl and give her work gloves, tools and gears for the seemingly incongruous juxtaposition. Engineering is the application of physics and requires intelligence and problem solving skills. It is a largely male dominated career but more girls should be motivated into looking into it.

February 22: George Washington was born this day in 1732. Here is his wife, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington. She was a widow with two children when Washington married her. He reportedly treated them like they were his own. The two also raised their grandchildren and several nieces and nephews together. If the middle panel on this dress were red, it would look a lot like what Martha Washington wore in this portrait by Eliphalet Frazer Andrews: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia…

February 23: Jeanne Roques was born on this day in 1889 in Paris, France. She performed under the stage name Musidora, being a one name celebrity before it was cool! She was in a series of silent films called Les Vampires where she played the villainous Irma Vep. (It's an anagram.) She was goth before goth was in!

When I'm done with this, I might go back and redo a few that I'm not happy with. I really wanted Odile to have a black swan in the background, but I didn't have the diamonds for it. I also want to make bat wings for Musidora and use another coat to look like she's wearing an all black body stocking.

Tomorrow is the birthday of Arcangela Tarabotti, a Venetian nun and proponent for women being educated. There's also Mardi Gras! This year happens to be a leap year, so February will have one more day. Look for this and more next week!
