Description
June 10: As promised, here's Dorothy Gale! This day is the birthday of actress and singer Judy Garland. She was in many films in the 30's and 40's but The Wizard of Oz continues to be her most popular role. She must have liked it too because she considered "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" her lucky song and would close every concert with it. Her life wasn't always a happy one, but she left us all with some good memories.June 11: This is King Kamehameha Day in Hawaii. Not what the DBZ fans think it is! It's a day to celebrate King Kamehameha, the monarch who united the islands of Hawaii. Love Nikki should consider making a hula costume with a grass skirt and lei. (There is a flower garland for the head, but the flowers looked temperate and I needed tropical.) I made do with Wonderful Holidays with the skin and hair changed to look more like a Hawaiian Native. (I'm thinking of using at least one POC a week in this challenge.) Purple is appropriate since it's a day that celebrates a king. And I threw in more flowers because the day is celebrated by putting flowers on King Kamehameha's statue.
June 12: This is Red Rose Day. Roses are the birth flower for the month of June and red roses in particular symbolize love. I have Nikki decked out in red roses and my new Red Wine wig.
June 13: This is Sewing Machine Day. Didn't you know there was one? The sewing machine made clothes quicker and cheaper to produce, practically jumpstarting the fashion industry. I just used the Sweet Tailor outfit as is. There is no actual sewing machine, but the thread spools on her belt look like the kind used on a sewing machine.
June 14: I had trouble deciding which day to celebrate here! June 14 is Flag Day and I do have a red, white and blue outfit but I want to save it for Fourth of July. It is also Strawberry Shortcake Day, Wear Blue Day and Flip Flop Day. Good thing pink and blue go together! I have her wearing a few strawberry items and a few blue items. The blue is to raise awareness for men's health. They can start by eating healthy strawberries! Those are geta rather than flip flops on her feet but close enough. She isn't carrying The Flag, just a flag.
June 15: This is World Jugglers Day. I have all but two items to complete the Circus Night outfit. I improvised with what I had.
June 16: This is Father's Day. I was gonna use a sweater vest since it's such a dad item, but it emphasized the bust too much. People think of the quintessential 50's TV dad as wearing thick glasses, but the only one I can think of is the dad from Dennis the Menace. The others either had 20/20 vision or only occasionally wore reading spectacles. With the black hair and fedora, I may have made this guy look a little like Clark Kent. (Well, Superman was kind to children.) Because this day is also Eat Your Vegetables Day, I gave him a carrot necklace and carrot umbrella. Flip the script and tell your dad to eat his vegetables!
Today is the anniversary of Amelia Earhart's first trans Atlantic flight. Next week, you'll see her, Joan of Arc, a Juneteenth celebrant and more!
