Description

"Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight)" by The Ramones was originally released in November 1987 as the B-side of the single "I Wanna Live" from the Brain Drain album. The video for the song featured a couple getting into a fight at a Christmas party. They make up with the guy giving the girl a present. She doesn’t like the color, so they start fighting again. Her feet are never seen in the video, so I just got some dressy shoes that matched her blouse. Here she is wearing the red scarf. Does it make her look bloated?

The Polar Express is a 2004 American animated adventure fantasy film directed by Robert Zemeckis, who co-wrote the screenplay with William Broyles Jr. based on the 1985 children's book by Chris Van Allsburg. It stars Tom Hanksin multiple roles. Nona Gaye provided the voice of a character known in the credits as Hero Girl but called “Holly” by the fans. She’s a spirited girl who always looks out for others.

Paddington Bear and the Christmas Surprise by Michael Bond is a children’s book where the Brown Family and the beloved character Paddington go to Barkridge’s Store to visit Santa’s Winter Wonderland. The Winter Wonderland isn’t as wonderous as advertised and Barkridge’s comes off as what we would now call a dead mall. But with a little help from Paddington, things get back on track. And of course, Santa gives Paddington a big jar of marmalade as a present.

Mermaids is a 1990 American family comedy-drama film directed by Richard Benjamin, and starring Cher, Bob Hoskins, Winona Ryder, Michael Schoeffling, and Christina Ricci in her film debut. Cher plays Rachel Flax, a carefree single mother. She goes to a costume party one New Year’s Eve dressed like a mermaid.

The Poseidon Adventure is a 1972 disaster film directed by Ronald Neame, produced by Irwin Allen and based on Paul Gallico's 1969 novel. The plot centers on the fictional SS Poseidon, an aging luxury liner on her final voyage from New York City to Athens before it is scrapped. On New Year's Day, it is overturned by a tsunami. Passengers and crew are trapped inside, and a preacher attempts to lead a small group of survivors to safety. Stella Stevens plays Linda Rogo, a former prostitute and now wife of Detective Lieutenant Mike Rogo. She deals with seasickness and falls to her death as the boat capsizes.

When Harry Met Sally... is a 1989 American romantic comedy drama film written by Nora Ephron and directed by Rob Reiner. It stars Billy Crystal as Harry and Meg Ryan as Sally. The story follows the title characters from the time they meet in Chicago and share a drive to New York through twelve years of chance encounters in New York City.  At a 1988 New Year's Eve party with Jess and Marie, Sally misses Harry. He is spending New Year's Eve at home, watching Dick Clark's 16th annual New Year's Rockin' Eve. Before midnight, Harry walks around the city. As Sally is about to leave the party, Harry appears and declares his love for her. She claims he is only there because he is lonely, but he lists the many reasons he loves her.

I already did something with Miss Piggy from A Muppet Family Christmas, so here’s Emily Bear. Unbeknownst to Fozzie, his mother Emily Bear is preparing to go to Malibu for the holiday. She’s willing to change plans last minute when her son and his friends (as in, every single Muppet ever, including the ones from Sesame Street) show up. The Fraggles do a cameo. No one invited the Skeksis or the Goblin King, though. Emily thinks Fozzie’s friends are weirdos, but they’re nice weirdos.

Next month will review life 200 years ago. 1824 will be commemorated with a First Lady named Elizabeth and a not-so-ladylike Elizabeth keeping the King of England company. Also, the invention of Braille, the Zulus exerting their power and the first novel written by a Canadian.
