Description
I realized I never posted any photos of my prototype senshi dolls! Mars is still available (www.etsy.com/listing/108199770β¦ ) but the rest recently found a home. This was one of my first large scale projects. The date on this photo was September 2012. I am in love with the prototype designs. They are bizarre and I do love the bizarre. I have designed my share of bizarre costumes over the years.
These dresses were a challenge to make. At the time, I hadn't fully drafted a sailor collar pattern and had quite a bit of trouble with the designs. I wasn't quite adept at drafting my own patterns, nor had I developed a method to do it. I also didn't know how to embroider collar stripes either. With all the ribbons and sequins and bias tape, I think it came out pretty well for its time. For some reason, I never did complete a Venus.
These are all some of my original dolls. I didn't even own a large sailor moon at the time (I have since greatly expanded my collection for photos and customizations), but what I had did fit the prototype designs. Mars kept losing her leg (her hip joint was really loose) and Black Lady's hair had long since faded. I didn't get a blue-haired Mercury until much later. Pluto and Mercury were probably my best kept dolls, even as aggressively as I used to play with them.
Perhaps I'll remake the prototypes again now that I have improved my trade. One day. But for now, enjoy a flashback while I complete my incredibly intensive current project. Super sekrit, unless you've seen the hints on my tumblr. Shhhhhhh. (my tumblr's over hereΒ badcatdolls.tumblr.com/ )

For something that can be, perhaps, a "protoype of a protoype" (don't mind me, I'm just being punny!), since you were still new to sewing patterns and whatnot, I think you did a pretty good job for being completely new to the craft. I'll be the first to admit - I'm still really new to sewing myself, and sewing things on such a small level is not easy.
It's a unique set of outfits go after; collection-wise, seeing dolls customized with the prototype outfits isn't something you usually see - if at all. Occasionally I'll see a "rarer" custom doll (Kousagi and purified Galaxia are two I can think off of right off the top of my head), but the prototype Sailors isn't something I've seen outside of your etsy/deviantart. And, who knows, maybe this will inspire other people to try their hand at it, and/or make your etsy more popular!
As for the outfits themselves, they do need a lot of work - and for something that was your first try at something, that's to be expected. After all, practice makes perfect! If I were you, however, I'd maybe try a few different materials for the accents in the outfits.
Instead of using wire, maybe lightweight air-dry clay on things like Rei (or, Miyabi, I suppose)'s amulet on her bow. I'v seen people use sign vinyl to make the mask for Sailor V customs, so maybe you can keep that in mind for the masks for Moon and Miyabi as well. (And cut them out to show the eyes, or just put the white space a la Sailor V customs/Tuxedo Mask with white paint).
Overall, I think the Jupiter prototype needs the most work; the green is too dark, and you should try to find a more lime green color, and her shoulder area should be blue instead of green. I would also probably consider putting stronger pleats in the skirts in the dolls - something a little bit more defined, like the skirts on the fukus of the 2000 Irwin dolls (which, out of all of the dolls produced so far, I think those ones were the most impressive with the quality of the outfits).
I really like how you got fabric with a pattern on it for Miyabi/Mars to match the delicate patterns on her bodice, it's a really nice touch - if you ever redo it though, I would shorten the length of the top a little bit and make it a little bit more "V" shaped, since her protoype design as a pretty short top and a dramatic cut.
I've taken a look at the rest of your gallery, and I'd say you've already came a long ways since you've made these! I would love to see you do more Sailor Moon customs in the future, along with maybe some new outfis altogether, such as the school uniforms! I've looked around at your etsy though, and I'm really glad to see more uncommon Sailor Moon outfits, like the Princess Sailor Moon from PGSM!
