Description
Scientific name: Erpeton tentaculatum
This is a species of rear-fanged snake native to Southeast Asia and is the only species of the genus Erpeton still extant. This snake gets its name from the two tentacles on their snout which serve a sensory function for the snake picking up vibrations. This snake does posses venomous fangs but they are small and positioned in the rear of its mouth, their diet consists entirely of fish. The females give live birth underwater.
The animal pictured belongs to Chester zoo.
